His name was Parnell Perkins, and until shortly after midnight, he'd been a claims adjustor for California Fidelity. Then someone came along and put paid to that line of work. And to any other. Parnell Perkins had been shot at close range and left for dead in the parking lot outside California Fidelity's offices. To the cops, it looked like a robbery gone sour. To Kinsey Millhone, it looked like the cops were walking away from the case. She didn't like the idea that a colleague and sometime drinking companion had been murdered. Or the idea that his murderer was loose and on the prowl. It made her feel exposed. Vulnerable. Bibianna Diaz was afraid for her life. If there was one thing she knew for sure, it was that you didn't cross Raymond Maldonado and live to tell the tale. And Bibianna had well and truly crossed him, running out on his crazy wedding plans and going into hiding in Santa Teresa--light years away from the Los Angeles barrio that was home turf to Raymond and his gang. Now she needed money to buy time, to make sure she'd put enough space between them. And the quickest way she knew to get money was to work an insurance scam--just like the ones Raymond was running down in L.A. The trouble was, Bibianna picked California Fidelity as her mark. And it wasn't long before her name surfaced in one of Parnell Perkins's open files and Kinsey was on her case. But so, too, was her spurned suitor, Raymond Maldonado. He had a rap sheet as long as his arm, a hair-trigger temper that was best left untested, and an inability to take no for an answer. He also had Tourette's syndrome, which did nothing to smooth out the kinks in his erratic and often violent behavior. All in all, Raymond Maldonado was not someone to spend a lot of time hanging out with. Unfortunately for Kinsey, she didn't have a lot of choice in the mater. Not after the love-sick Raymond kidnapped Bibianna. Like it or not, Kinsey was stuck babysitting Bibianna along with Raymond and his macho crew. You might say she was a prisoner of love. It may be Kinsey Millhone's most complicated and risk-filled case. It certainly is Sue Grafton's wittiest venture into low-life crime. It's "H" is for Homicide, and it confirms yet again that Kinsey Millhone is "a wonderful character, tough but not brutish, resourceful and sensitive, a fit knight to walk those mean streets with her male predecessors" (the Los Angeles Times) and that Sue Grafton is "a heads-up delight" (Detroit News).

I finished the H audiobook this week - last book of 2022. I‘m burning through the Sue Grafton mysteries and loving them. 2022 was good for reading - I exceeded my goal!

This one wasn‘t my favorite. I wasn‘t invested in the story line. Hoping the next one is great! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

A good re-read. Events at the beginning of the book aren‘t developed as much as the reader is initially led to think. The hapless murder victim at the beginning (and on the cover) only hints at more serious things to come. H is for Hostage would probably have been a better title.

This hardcover edition was the beginning of my parents‘ tradition gifting me with the latest Grafton as it came out so that I wouldn‘t wait until the PB edition.

Enjoyed this more than the last couple of letters - I loved Kinsey undercover! The titular homicide wasn‘t very prominent though. H is for Hostage may have been a better title?

In this installment, Kinsey goes undercover to investigate fraudulent insurance claims. She befriends the woman she‘s investigating to get deeper into the crime ring. The story flowed well for me, but the ending seemed pretty rushed and the epilogue abrupt.

This book has seen better days but i will repurpose it making origami flowers. Back to the review...loved this book! This time Kinsey goes undercover and is basically in constant danger during the entire book. Was surprised at the ending. Love this series!

Grafton really crapped this one out. I love Kinsey but not enough to stick around to see how an insurance scam ring pans out. I don't see how the homicide in the title could even be connected and she basically allowed herself to be abducted to see what the ring is all about for Dolan. I'll skip to the next book but this was a wash for me.

GypsyKat My mom loves this series. I think it‘s so sad that the author died before she could finish it. 5y
IamIamIam @GypsyKat Oh my, I didn't know that!!! I like the series but this was a clunker! 5y

My first Grafton and it was an alright case and an alright investigator. I don‘t think I‘ll continue with this series.

Meh. I couldn‘t get into this one as much as the others. The main story focused on insurance fraud, which was kind of a yawn. It was filled with very unlikeable characters, and they appalled/annoyed me in equal doses. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 #atoyreread

My kindle died on me mid-trip, so now this old copy of H is for Homicide has become my first Sue Grafton. The story is delightfully retro (typewriters! Pay phones! 80s hair cuts!) but has also completely drawn me in - I can‘t put this one down. Any fan of classic police procedural sand cozy mystery series will seriously like this book - and the best news is, there are 24 more book by this author!

I'm tired of Kinsey's internalised misogyny and how ALL of the bad guys in this are POC.
#24in48 progress and #LitsyAtoZ progress too

This is how I'll be tracking my hours now. I did a screen shot just before the crash, so I just did the maths. As I read it will count down to 0 but I will be posting my % progress on goodreads.com/ellanarosetw at the end of each chapter to prove I'm reading. I really do need a new phone. So basically this is how long until the 24hrs are done.

Tea break! Making good progress with #24in48 and #LitsyAtoZ too so rewarding myself with Twinings green tea.
EDIT My phone has just epically crashed so I'm now doing a countdown; it deleted the progress on the timer so this is my only option. Yes there were profanities, and I need a new phone

DGRachel Oh no! I'm so sorry. That stinks. 7y

I've just woke up but currently still in bed. This is my starting time for my next book, Book H for #LitsyAtoZ and my second book for #24in48. I've had less than five hours sleep so I'll have to nap later. In other news I was at 1,800 ish #Litfluence and now I'm at 2,000+!! Right I better crawl out of bed I guess.
