Coulrophobia & Fata Morgana
Coulrophobia & Fata Morgana | Jacob M Appel
4 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
Fiction. Jacob Appel's narratives pull you in from the first entrance of their characters, whether it's a woman picking up her errant grandson from the police station, or two US-Canadian border guards with too much time to kill. The portraits are sharp and perceptive, with a vivid sense of scene. They can also be quietly devastating, as in the love story Counting, or bitterly funny, as in Saluting the Magpie, which is to say that Appel is a writer of versatility and verve. COULROPHOBIA & FATA MORGANA is a collection that renews my faith in storytelling." David Galef"

Great collection of short stories. My favorite is the one where the priest's dead wife's ghost dances and makes out with Greta Garbo. Learned a lot from these stories. Highly recommended. 4 stars.

How strange that days after finishing The Essex Serpent, I win a Goodreads giveaway for the tagged book which features the atmospheric mirage phenomenon “Fata Morgana” in its title 🤔
If you have read Essex Serpent you know that this is a term used to explain some of the bizarre sea sightings in the small English town in this story. Weird!
