Pearl Harbor Ghosts
Pearl Harbor Ghosts: The Legacy of December 7, 1941 | Thurston Clarke
5 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
A landmark book published to rave reviews a decade ago, Pearl Harbor Ghosts has now been updated to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the surprise attack that forever changed the course of history. Full of gripping drama and vibrant details, here is the intimate human story of the events surrounding that fateful day of December 7, 1941the glamorous tropical city that seemed too beautiful to suffer devastation . . . the stunned naval personnel whose lives would permanently be divided into before and after Pearl Harbor . . . the ordinary Honolulu residents who were tragically unprepared to be the first target in the Pacific war . . . the Japanese pilots who manned the squadron of deadly silver bombers . . . and the islands community of Japanese-Americans whose lives would never be the same again. Blending meticulous historic recreation with lively reporting, Clarke counterpoints the freeze-frame nightmare of the 1941 bombing with the disturbing realities of present-day Honolulu, where hundreds of veterans, both American and Japanese, converge each year to relive every hour of the attack. Wealthy Waikiki landowners and native Hawaiian farmers, admirals and nurses, Navy wives and government officialsall take their part in Clarkes rich tapestry of memory and insight. In the end, Pearl Harbor emerges as a trauma that spread from Oahu to engulf the nation and the worldan event that continues to reverberate in the lives of all who experienced it. From the Trade Paperback edition.

#MagicalMay #MemorialDay

I‘ve posted this book before & posted it for Memorial Day too but I bought it after my first visit to Pearl Harbor & the Arizona Memorial right after I moved to Hawaii & it has always stuck in my mind. Here‘s to remembering & honoring all our service people, especially the ones who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Eggs Must be an amazing place 👏🏻📚💕 4y

Day 29 #MayBookFlowers #inmemoriam #RockinMay #America A book that fits both photo prompts today. One of my favorite books on the attack on Pearl Harbor, it stands in memoriam to all of the brave military members who lost their lives that day & all those before & after them. My dad joined the navy when America went to war & was stationed in Hawaii. I honor him & all of our military who sacrifice & have sacrificed so much to protect America.🇺🇸❤️

Cinfhen Such a fitting choice 🙌🏻I applaud your dad and all the brave men & women who serve our country ❤️🇺🇸❤️ 7y
josie281 ❤️ Today is a tough day for my husband (medically retired from the Army last year). Thanks for the love and sharing it right back to your dad! 7y

I was honored to get to visit this historic site this summer. I discussed this with my students today, and I was glad to get them thinking about the enormity of this day. Being 14, the bombing of Pearl Harbor seems like ancient history to them. I was able to show them pictures and talk about my feelings and what I saw. It was a good discussion. I am humbled by the sacrifices of The Greatest Generation.

BooksForEmpathy Thanks for sharing this! My grandma (she just passed away in October) grew up on Oahu and was there this day so many years ago. She remembered how she thought the planes were just practicing at the base, and then it went quiet as the destruction and panic happened. Surreal that it is part of my personal history and our country's. Glad you were able to talk about it with your students. 7y
NatalieR Glad to hear (read) you had such a cool conversation with your students about this day. 7y

Day7 #seasonsreadings2016 #setonanisland #recommendsday I have many books w/island settings, these islands in particular, but since today is the 75th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, I decided to both feature & recommend this book. I bought & read it years ago on my first visit to the USS Arizona Memorial & like the fact that it covers a lot of detail but in a engaging way, focusing on the people in an anecdotal and very moving style.
