No idea if I would classify this as fantasy, horror, sci-fi or historical fiction - it can probably fall under all of these in some way or another. This book was not like anything I've ever read but it was a great read. The author really nails Zebulon's voice and it suits the book well. The book seemed to be a bit long at parts but I think it fits Zebulon's character (I picture him as a rambler with quite the vocabulary).

Nothing like a Friday evening spent with your book and a beer. When the little guy goes to sleep tonight this will be my evening. I thought this beer was fitting for the book. Hoping I can surpass the 200 page mark this evening. I have no idea what genre I would classify this book in at the moment but I'm enjoying it so far.

I'm starting this long book since I'm basically stuck in the house (although it's with a toddler and a baby). It will probably take forever for me to get through it as it's a good 641 pages long - wish me luck! Not sure if this will be more horror or fantasy but I'm excited to see what it brings. I'm also loving this cover!

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick This has been on my TBR stacks at home for a few years. I think the size is what deters me and it's now pushed to the back. Maybe I need to rearrange my books to pull some old ones out and finally get to them. 4y

Diving right into this one. Book number 39 of my year. This ones been on my TBR for about a year and a half so I‘m excited to finally start it ♥️

Caffeinated_Reader That was one crazy journey! It‘s crazy because Finch is not a hero or a “good guy” but you can‘t help root for him. He definitely tries lol I will read the conclusion part 2 because I must know how it truly ends. 5y

Well written, enjoyable read that was just a bit too long in my opinion.

I love these books. Volume One was good: unique, fun, and well-written. Volume Two was even better, and I still think about Zebulon often, almost a year after finishing the books. It amazes how few ratings these books have (and how low they are for Volume One).

For anyone who may want to try them: definitely do the audio versions! So good, and an experience with Volume Two that can‘t be missed. 😃

I've been doing more writing than reading lately, so I haven't been on much, but we stopped by a local discount book store today, and I thought I'd share my #bookhaul.

I wasn't planning on buying so many, but my other half reminded me I haven't bought anything for myself at all lately, so I might as well go for it.

Challenge accepted! 😉

SpeculativeFemale @sprainedbrain @StaceyKondla Zebulon was actually a really lucky last minute addition. The book store employee at the check out looked at what I was buying and suggested it. He even ran across the store to grab it to show me. And for $10 for the box set, how could I say no? 😊 7y
StaceyKondla @SpeculativeFemale That's a great deal! I hope you enjoy the Zebulon duology as much as I did 😊 7y

Really enjoyed this book even though quite long. Story dragged a bit in some spots but love the author's descriptive writing style. Just enough grotesque without going too far. I'd give it 4/5 ⭐️

Well written. Touches on major events affecting the U.S. between 1896-1940. But for young readers? No. Young adult, yes, but if a youngster read this they may end up psychologically scarred from the freakiest sex scene! 😳😳😳 Rating: 7 out of 10.

sprainedbrain Ah, that sex scene. 😳 poor Zebulon. ❤️❤️ 7y
RealBooks4ever @sprainedbrain 😄 I kept thinking, he has to go through another entire book like that?! 7y

This is by far one of the weirdest (and longest! I mean the hardback could seriously be used as a weapon) reads ever but I couldn't put it down. If you like resurrected gangsters, freak shows and old Hollywood, this one is for you. Definitely gonna read second volume this summer. #COMEONEILEEN

Absolutely disgusting; one of the most important and profound YA books I have read.

quote
promaethius

The girl did not know how to smile ..., but she dropped her shoulders to convey disarmament. The movement pulled at the sleeves of her tunic and I saw dozens of lines drawn a cross her pudgy forearms in seashell patterns. They were scars -- deliberate and artful and the most beautiful thing about her, which was, I realized a truth of considerable melancholy.

I was sold on page one. I mean, look at that opening!

The writing holds up to that strong start during it's 600+ page run. With our dead protagonist slowly decaying across decades of history in interconnected vignettes. It's in turn kinda gross, funny, sad, and hilariously gross.

It's tough to see this as a complete review because it's half a book. After volume one I'm very eager to experience the second half of Finch's tale.

I really loved this book! I read it at the end of December and it became my book of the year. It is epic in scope, covers some interesting history and has a terrifying medicine circus, a mad scientist, bootleg booze, a Hollywood starlet and so much more! Can't wait for book 2!!

I wanted to like this book. I truly did. But what I found was a book that could not indicate the point in 600+ pages. While I appreciate its volume 1 of 2 (more?) I found myself powering through rather than enjoying the world I was immersed in. There were good elements but overall it was bloated.
