My Beer Year
My Beer Year: Adventures With Hop Farmers, Craft Brewers, Chefs, Beer Sommeliers, and Fanatical Drinkers As a Beer Master in Training | Lucy Burningham
19 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
A love note to beer--appreciating the history, craftsmanship, and taste of craft beer as told by a woman striving for beer-expert status. As a journalist spurred by curiosity and thirst, Lucy Burningham made it her career to write about craft beer, traveling to hop farms, attending rare beer tasting parties, and visiting as many taprooms, breweries, and festivals as possible. With this as her introduction, Lucy decided to take her relationship with beer to the next level: to become a certified beer expert. As Lucy studies and sips her way to becoming a Certified Cicerone, she meets an eclectic cast of characters, including brewers, hop farmers, beer sommeliers, pub owners, and fanatical beer drinkers. Her journey into the world of beer is by turns educational, social, and personal--just as enjoying a good beer should be.

Beer is fun to drink, but is usually boring to read about. This is not one of those times. Everyone who loves beer should read this book.

Interesting. When I drink beer at home, I pour it from the bottle into a chilled glass that I keep in my freezer. But now that I know this, I'm not going to do that anymore.

Unlike plants that have male and female parts on the same plant, entire hop plants are either male or female. While both "genders" of plants produce hop flowers, the male plants will pollinate the females to produce seeds, which makes them undesirable for brewing. That's why every plant on a hop farm is female.

In my opinion, any use of hops for anything other than beer is sinful, and is a waste of perfectly good hops.

I am a craft beer enthusiast, so the subject matter was great. The writing was approachable and entertaining. The tone got a little pretentious, but on the whole this was an enjoyable book.
