Cinfhen I‘d try your library services and borrow as many as you can...this way if you don‘t like the content or narration it didn‘t cost you anything but a little bit of time. Also I always listen to at least the first chapter before I decide if the book is a good fit. Sometimes I need a few minutes to adjust to the narrator. ljuliel Maeve Binchy and Rosamunde Pilcher books. Both very good authors that divert your attention and help you to focus on THEIR world instead of your own. They sorta take you away for awhile. 4y

SomedayAlmost Gay Yellen‘s “Body Next Door” for some fun, well-written, smart romantic suspense that keeps you guessing and entertains. Also, rich world-building is a respite. I‘ve always loved the Narnia series.

I‘m looking for recommendations please! I found out recently - as an almost 38 year old adult - that I have ADHD. (I feel this explains my distracted squirrel moments in life.) Does anyone have any good book recommendations on the subject? My therapist recommended one on mindfulness that I plan on reading, but I was hoping to find some others as well. Thank you!

alexa_d The classic is "You Mean I'm Not Lazy, Stupid, or Crazy?" which is, rather atypically of ADHD books, written by two women who actually HAVE it. Most ADHD books by women are for parents of ADHD children. It's so refreshing and more helpful to have a book from "our" perspective ? 5y

Laughterhp It depends on what type of detective you want to follow. I personally like Poirot. I really like The ABC Murders but that‘s later in his life when he‘s retired. I also really liked Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. I really liked And Then There Were None, that‘s probably one of my favorites, but it doesn‘t follow a detective. 5y

Librarybelle My favorite is And Then There We‘re None...it‘s a stand-alone, and it‘s so good! Definitely thriller aspects. Murder on the Orient Express is a classic good one as well. 5y

I know everyone has their own personal tastes...someone on-line said they found Poirot annoying. 🤣 Unfortunately I tend to be a stickler (usually) about reading a series in order (at least by character). So I may just take a character (like Poirot) and read those in order. However, I might start with the standalones first and go from there... 5y

mrsmarch Murder on the Orient Express, And Then There Were None, Sad Cypress, Mystery of the Blue Train, They Came to Baghdad (a stand-alone)...Frankly whatever you pick up, stick with it. I‘m always a bit bored at the beginning but then I‘m engrossed and can‘t put it down. 5y

Jaimelire Hercule Poirot is the best, but Miss Marple has her charms too. I loved “And Then There were None”. Seriously, they are all good! 5y

mabell As you can tell, everyone has their favorites, and they can differ greatly! I HATE (is that too strong? 😆) And Then There Were None, and everyone else seems to love it. 🤷‍♀️ For stand-alones, the Secret of Chimneys and The Man in the Brown Suit are both terrific and early works. (Chimneys is actually a Superintendent Battle, a recurring character in a few). You‘ll draw your own conclusions 😄 But I know you will enjoy Dame Agatha! ⬇️ 5y

erzascarletbookgasm Go with Poirot if you like your detective quirky, even pompous but undeniably intelligent. My favourite featuring Poirot - The Murder Of Roger Ackyord. Miss Marple is great too. For Tommy and Tuppence, perhaps you‘ll want to start from the first book. If you wish to read stand alones, my favourites- And Then There Were None, Endless Night, Crooked House ( you‘ve read), Ordeal by Innocence. Happy discovering your favourite Christie! 5y

Lady_Tigana_20 I started by reading a biography of her life. Then I worked my way through her Miss Marples, starting with the first one: The Murder at the Vicarage. There are 12 of those plus a book of short stories. I have only read two Poirots: Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. Plan to start Poirot after I get some of my TBR list knocked down a bit. I haven‘t been that big a mystery reader—although I love Elizabeth Peters—but I like Christie. 5y

Sarah83 As the others already said, everyone likes different books written by her. I personally like the locked in mysteries written by her. When I was younger, I only liked Miss Marple, but it turned out, that I can read Poirot today aswell. If you like Sherlock Holmes Poirot always seems like a bit of a parody of Sherlock. It's the same buddy construction as Holmes & Watson by Doyle so it's Poirot & Hastings by Christie. 5y

I was so surprised at its charm. Same with A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, though it‘s been so long that I can‘t recall the ending. I remember the lice & kerosene treatment! 5y

JanuarieTimewalker13 I LOVED Zion!!! My friend and I drove from Vegas. It‘s a ride. You know, Mesquite , Nevada is a cool place to visit, right over border from St George, Utah. If you want to gamble. I love Casablanca hotel...stay overnight, they have a pretty pool. Keep in mind we did this back in ‘09. Not sure if things have changed. 5y

rretzler Both are beautiful parks. We were there about 3 years ago and I can‘t remember any specific places to visit, but it is packed in the summer. I remember we tried to eat lunch in the little town near the visitors center of Zion (I think) and had to wait over an hour at a small cafe for our food and a table. Unless you plan to bring your own food, allow plenty of extra time 5y

AsYouWish Superstitious by R.L. Stine is pretty good. I also love the Vampire Academy series. Slow Burn by Julie Garwood or actually anything by Julie Garwood. She writes historical romance and contemporary romance/mysteryish books. 6y

Trollkonstnaren Fiction or non-fiction? I read more from fiction so here we go 😊 In a deep deep woods was exciting crime/horror. And one of my current reads is John Cabbal the Necromancer (also crime/horror). I can recommend both as they have a dark tune to keep you hooked every moment. 6y

Trollkonstnaren And then there is The Baztan trilogy. It combines crime solving and mytology very intensively and gives a nice twist for traditional crime genre. 6y

rwmg It depends what you like. My favourite short story is "Semley's Necklace", which is also a prologue to "Rocannon's World". It's hard to beat for sheer mythic beauty. Some say "The Word for World is Forest" was the inspiration for the film Avatar. For an exploration of political ideas, I would go for "The Dispossessed", and for ideas on gender "The Left Hand of Darkness". 6y

I‘m currently writing about my grandmother who had Alzheimer‘s while dealing with memory issues of my own, and I‘ve become fascinated with the topic of how different people deal with the idea of losing part of themselves through faded memories. Littens!! I need your help. I very recently started listening to audiobooks on my commute (kinda helps to keep my hands free when I'm jammed up on strangers on the L train 😂) but I'm a total newbie. Started with Born a Crime (loved) and just finished Waking Gods. Now I'm totally lost as to what to pick next.

Can you give me some audio recommendations?!

12parsecs I'm listening to The Fifth Season right now, and I'm so glad I chose to listen instead of read! It's soooo detailed and would be quite a chunky read, but this the voices for each character it's easier to follow the story line 😜 7y

Amie When I started listening to audiobooks I found nonfiction to be the easiest to follow until I got used to them. I also see The Serpent King and Etiquette and Espionage on your TBR stack and I liked both of those on audio. 7y

Kris10 I listened to all the Robert Galbraith books (Cormoran Strike series) on audio and loved them, even after bailing on the print version twice. It's super long, but I also finished 11/22/63 not long ago and loved it too. 7y

BarbaraTheBibliophage Al Franken's new book is great - he does a great job narrating. I've listened to most of the Kinsey Millhone books by Sue Grafton on audio. Great narrator and easy reads. The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon is amazing on audio - great narrator. 7y

Iindseyo One of my go-to's is The Rook. Set in an alternate London, a woman wakes up with no memory and has to figure out who she is. Turns out she works at a Ministry of Magic type org where hijinks ensue. 😊 Fun fish-out-of-water antics and a great British accent from the narrator!

A good friend has been diagnosed with cancer ?( a "treatable" kind) so she should be okay but still...
She likes mysteries (huge Murder She Wrote fan) but doesn't read them a ton.
Any suggestions are welcome. Beyond the obvious, I'm clueless.

I love Donna Andrews Meg Langslow books which are not necessarily under the radar but a good long series which might be good if there's a lot of time to fill. I've tagged the first one.
