Pickpick

Excellent, thorough account of the British Government in the last days of May 1940. Lukacs‘s argument is that although the decisions made during these days did not win WWII for Britain, they were crucial in keeping them from losing the war. Churchill is endlessly fascinating. This was a re-read for me, and just as good the second time.

I saw the film Darkest Hour yesterday, and I remembered reading this history of Winston Churchill years ago. The film takes place over several weeks in May 1940, while this book focuses intently on 5 of those days. I have always been fascinated with Winston Churchill. The film was very good (Gary Oldman as Churchill was brilliant) but I was troubled by some of the dramatic license the film took with history. Time for a reread!
