The Early Birds | Laurie Graham
8 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
The Early Birds is a hymn to lifelong female friendship and the touching and funny follow-up to The Future Homemakers of America by the celebrated Laurie Graham. 'Why is Laurie Graham not carried on people's shoulders through cheering crowds? Her books are brilliant!' Marian Keyes Picking up ten years after The Future Homemakers of America left off, The Early Birds follows Peggy, Kath, Gayle, Lois and Audrey through the turn of the twenty-first century. The women are now in their seventies and time is rendering its Accounts Payable: arthritis, cataracts, forgetfulness and departures. From the dawn of the new millennium - at which the anti-Christ unaccountably fails to appear, despite evangelist Gayle's predictions - Peggy soldiers on through new upheavals, including her ex-husband Vern's Alzheimer's diagnosis, and the death of one of her live-in friends. Then, on a clear blue day in September 2001, the US Air Force scrambles too late to save America from four hostile attacks, and for the first time Peggy wonders if being a USAF wife - the constant worry about your husband, the faraway postings in Alaska, Norfolk, Siberia, the lack of control over your own life - was worth it. 'You're getting very negative in your old age, Peggy Dewey,' says Lois. 'Sure it was worthwhile. Leastways we're not speaking Russky. And besides, we had some fun. Didn't we have some fun?'

Hey my #SpookyGhostClub! So wants some #EarlyBirdPoints for #Scarathlon?! I know I do 😆

We‘re still taking applications until October 1st, but these early bird tasks must be completed by the last day of September to qualify you for the points!

Traci1 Just a quick question. Since we're keeping track of our own points, do you want us to tag you in all of our posts for scarathlon? Or would you prefer we didn't? I just don't want to inundate you with tons of posts if you'd rather just be tagged for like main ones. 7mo
TheSpineView 👍🤩😊 7mo
Clwojick @Traci1 You can tag me in all posts, I don‘t mind! But DEFINITELY tag me in your point checkins ☺️ 7mo

New book group read ..... first page or so sounds interesting :)

So to follow up on this about a month later .. finished this yesterday. Great read it sort of rambled and meandered through the life stories and older years of Peggy and her friends ... it was funny, sad, moving in equal measure .... I liked the feel of it with its American roots and hints of their past lives and their older years ... worth reading I thought

Some bookish swag arrived for me yesterday - these lovely recipe cards for Laurie Graham's next book. I'm so excited about The Early Birds - it's a sequel to Future Homemakers of America which I loved - and the all the recipes have a dose of Graham's wit about them.

Roll on release day! (May 18th here)
