Into the Wilderness
Into the Wilderness: #1 in the Wilderness series | Sara Donati
56 posts | 62 read | 46 to read
The first in Sara Donati's bestselling Wilderness series, this epic novel of love and adventure interweaves the fate of the Mohawk Nation with the destiny of two outsiders from different worlds. When Elizabeth Middleton leaves England to join her father and brother in a remote mountain village on the edge of the New York wilderness, she does so with a strong will and an unwavering purpose: to establish a school. It is December 1792 when she arrives in a cold climate unlike any she has ever experienced and meets a man unlike any she has ever encountered - a white man dressed like a Native American, tall and lean and unsettling in his honesty. He is Nathaniel Bonner, also known to the Mohawk people as 'Between-Two-Lives'. Determined to provide schooling for all the village children - white, black and Native American - Elizabeth is soon at odds with the slave owners, as well as her own father, who insists she marry local doctor Richard Todd. Such an alliance could save her father from financial ruin, but would call into question the ownership of Hidden Wolf, the mountain where Nathaniel, his father, and a small group of Native Americans live and hunt . . . 'One of those rare stories that lets you breathe the air of another time, and leave your footprints on the snow of a wild, strange place' Diana Gabaldon

Has anyone heard of this series before? This is the first time I‘ve seen this. This first book was published 1998. So far so good. Good enough that I‘ve put other books on hold!!

TEArificbooks I read this whole series. It was suggested to me while I waited for the next Outlander book to come out. In fact, Herself let the author. mention the Outlander characters in one of the books. 9mo

Congratulations to @TheLudicReader and thanks for hosting this awesome giveaway!
This was hard- because my answer is often genre based. I‘ve read Into The Wilderness, Pawn of Prophecy and Betsy Tacy more times than I can count- because they are amazing.
2. I recommend all of the above as well as The Color Of Water and lately Spillover because they are all great books.

TheLudicReader Awesome selections. The only one I am familiar with is Into the Wilderness. Thanks for participating. 3y

I really, really enjoyed this epic romance! Similar to Outlander, it‘s sprawling, rich, and dramatic with a strong love story. Sara Donati has created amazing and well written characters, within a beautiful setting. I savored this story. I‘m excited for the second book!

Kimberlone Did you notice the Outlander connection in this book? I also really liked this book, but for some reason haven‘t been inclined to continue with the series. 4y

I read this book because Claire and Jaime from Outlander are mentioned. This novel takes place in New York with the fight for land with the Mohawks and the people of Paradise. Problem with this book is that it has no action other than a hidden gold supply and angry men fighting over money and land. The lead character Elizabeth has a backbone but this book is too long and after page 500 I just needed it to end. Elizabeth is NOT Claire!:)

I wish that the last 200-250 pages could have been cut, but overall I thought this was a great read. This was a little outside my comfort zone and had some very large similarities to Outlander, but different enough to recommend to all Outlander fans. I won't be carrying on with the remaining books in the series as the first was good enough for me.

31.5 weeks pregnant and only one comfortable position available. Doing a lot of reading today. About 200 pages into 'into the wilderness' and re-reading #ACOTAR before #ACOWAR comes out. 👍🏻

Bakingbookworm I'm thinking of rereading Into the Wilderness. I was hoping to wait and start the series in the summer while on holiday. I don't think I can wait that long though! 7y
Hazel0303 I know what you mean @Bakingbookworm I know I won't get much reading in once the baby is born so I'm trying to finish it before then! I find it very interesting that Diana Gabaldon gave it a rave review and then you see her review in Goodreads and it's two stars. It's impossible not to compare this with Outlander. It's different enough to keep my interest though. 7y
Bakingbookworm @Hazel0303 That's odd that she gave it a low rating on GR. Sara and Diana are friends apparently. While I love Claire and Jamie Gabaldon is too wordy. I loved Donati's writing style much more. And Claire & Jamie are mentioned in the 1st book too which is kind of cool. :) 7y
See All 6 Comments
Hazel0303 I could not agree more about Outlander's wordiness @Bakingbookworm and how Donati's book moves with a much better pace. I guess her GR review is how she personally feels and her review for the book cover and insert is more of how she sees the book professionally. That bad review being public knowledge though has to be weird for Donati. 7y
Bakingbookworm I guess I just don't get why she wouldn't like it. It's a great story with strong characters and adventure. Kind of like her own series. Hmmm. 7y

This book was ok. I was disappointed I didn't enjoy it more, because it had many elements that I like, especially the strong female characters. At some point, I will try the next in the series. I thought Donati's The Gilded Hour was much more interesting. On a fun note, I was so excited this morning to collect Jeeves and Sapphire in my kitten collector game! 😻😻
