⭐️5/5

Another reread that didn‘t disappoint! This novel in dialogue is historical fiction story on the biggest slave auction to take place in America. With various viewpoints that span years, this story on slavery will pull at heartstrings. It‘s an easy read that deserves time to be sat with.

Recommendation: YA/general audience. Good for educational purposes.

Reread #12 | Book 28 |⭐️5/5
Beautiful written novel in dialogue that tells the story of the largest slave auction in the United States. Written similarly to a play, the author uses both real and imagined people to look at different viewpoints of slavery at the time, and in the process creates a story that will probably make you cry. So glad I reread this, also on a day that stormed uncontrollably.

Perhaps not the wisest choice to listen to on this tense and historic day, but this was a very good "novel in dialogue". A little intense for my 11-year-old and we had to have a few conversations and will probably have a few more in the future to process a lot of this fictionalized story about the largest slave sale in US history.

#76 of my year. This one is going to break my heart I just know it 😔

Caffeinated_Reader This was so beautifully told that I spent my day crying so much for these people. I could almost feel the heaviness of the “weeping day” myself and I can‘t even imagine how anyone could look at another person and just see something to sell. History is so incredibly important to remember and be told so that we don‘t ever repeat it. 4y
Caffeinated_Reader Looking at society now I can‘t help feel that not enough people have stopped to really think about and feel the weight of what slavery has done to families and others. If they had then it wouldn‘t be so divided as it still is today. It makes me proud to teach my children to have good hearts. This story will stay with me forever. 4y
phantomx Thank you so much for sharing this book. There are still so many things that not enough people are aware of, and history presents repeatedly to us sufferings, wrongs and mistakes, truimphs of true and honest good, and the willingness to protect what is right and just. 4y
Caffeinated_Reader @phantomx very welcome. I love & agree with what you‘ve said. I have always believed in those of us who are brave and willing enough to stand up for what‘s right and to witness the wrong so that we can do our part to educate others and prevent as much damage as we possibly can. It‘s small work but important. 💛💛💛 4y

This story is based on the largest auction of slaves in American history, on March 2&3 1859 in Savannah Georgia. This Auction was known as “The Weeping Time.” Of 436 slaves sold, Pierce Butler made $303,850 of selling “human chattel.” PLEASE READ this book. It brings to life the horrors of separating families and how auctions were really run. While it makes me sick to my stomach to read, it‘s important to read.

Cried my eyes out. Getting ready to teach the antebellum period to my students and read the accompanying English book and can't say enough good things!

Loved the structure and POV changes within the novel. Did a wonderful job on emphasizing the dignity of all people!

This is a great novel about the biggest slave auction in American history. It is a short book in a "play-like" form which I enjoyed reading.

This book is hard, but worth it. Told in sort-of play/script form, it is a great story about a tragic event. #blackandwhitecovers
