Summit
Summit: A Novel | Harry Farthing
8 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
In the autumn of 1938, Germany’s reichsführer, Heinrich Himmler, is growing frustrated at the British using their regional power in India to block the passage of an SS expedition to Tibet. Determined to spite them, he plots to steal something the British hold dear and have failed for the seventh time that spring to achieve—a first summit of Mount Everest. Seventy years later, seasoned mountain guide Neil Quinn’s ninth visit to the top of the world’s highest mountain, this time in charge of the sixteen-year-old son of a Long Island billionaire, begins to unravel. As a desperate fight for their lives begins in the freezing air high above Tibet, Quinn stumbles across a clue to a story that challenges everything he thinks he knows about the great mountain. When the bitter aftermath of Quinn’s disastrous climb turns to violent tragedy in Kathmandu, his discovery pushes him into a relentless journey that takes him from the dangerous heights of Everest to the equally treacherous margins of a new Europe, where history hungers to repeat itself. Amid a rich and diverse cast of characters, each with their own reason to possess the mystery of his discovery, Neil Quinn has to fight, increasingly desperately, for order and the truth.

I loved the ending of this book! I wasn‘t expecting it, and it was wonderful.

While this was a slow read for me, I‘m blaming that on a really busy month so far. I think if I hadn‘t been so distracted it would have gone much quicker.

Written with two storylines- one in 1939, with the Germans trying to be the first to summit Everest, and one current day, trying to sort out that history- Summit is an adventure thriller. Good stuff.

Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books I think you‘d like it! While it‘s a work of fiction, it follows some factual events. I really liked the parts about mountain climbing! 6y

Hooked_on_books @Soubhiville Groovy! I shall add it to the monstrous TBR! 😆 6y
Soubhiville @ElizabethAndino thank you! It has improved a great deal! 6y

#Froedrick and I are getting back into Summit this morning. It‘s a very interesting book, but a little slow moving.

Happy Sunday everyone!

I haven‘t had much time to read over the last week, because of hosting my MIL. I have snuck in a few chapters before bed and before work, and I think this is going to be a great book. Life gets back to normal tomorrow evening, thank goodness!

Hooked_on_books This one sounds interesting. I‘ll be curious to see what you think of it. 6y

So yesterday, inspired by reading about Mount Everest, I decided to attempt my own summit (not Everest - Mailbox Peak) and almost fell off the mountain. Aggie is much more agile in the snow than me😕 #dogsoflitsy

Hung out with Mount Everest summitter, author & audiobook narrator of 'Summit' (novel with mountain climbing and Nazis!) today! I heard he killed it in the studio this past week, so I can't wait for the audio to be finalized!
