"J" is for Jaffe: Wendell Jaffe, dead these past five years. Or so it seemed until his former insurance agent spotted him in the bar of a dusty little resort halfway between Cabo San Lucas and La Paz. "In truth, the facts about Wendell Jaffe had nothing to do with my family history, but murder is seldom tidy and no one ever said revelations operate in a straight line. It was my investigation into the dead man's past that triggered the inquiry into my own, and in the end the two stories became difficult to separate." Five years ago, when Jaffe's thirty-five-foot Fuji ketch was found drifting off the Baja coast, it seemed a sure thing he'd gone overboard. The note he left behind admitted he was flat broke, his business bankrupt, his real estate gambit nothing but a huge Ponzi scheme about to collapse, with criminal indictment certain to follow. When the authorities soon after descended on his banks and his books, there was nothing left: Jaffe had stripped the lot. "Given my insatiable curiosity and my natural inclination to poke my nose in where it doesn't belong, it was odd to realize how little attention I'd paid to my own past. I'd simply accepted what I was told, constructing my personal mythology on the flimsiest of facts." But Jaffe wasn't quite without assets. There was the $500,000 life insurance policy made out to his wife and underwritten by California Fidelity. With no corpse to prove death, however, the insurance company was in no hurry to pay the claim. Dana Jaffe had to wait out the statutory five years until her missing husband could be declared legally dead. Just two months before Wendell Jaffe was sighted in that dusty resort bar, California Fidelity finally paid in full. Now they wanted the truth. And they were willing to hire Kinsey Millhone to dig it up. As Kinsey pushes deeper into the mystery surrounding Wendell Jaffe's pseudocide, she explores her own past, discovering that in family matters as in crime, sometimes it's better to reserve judgment. "J" is for judgment: the kind we're quick to make and often quicker to regret. "J" Is for Judgment: Kinsey Millhone's tenth excursion into the dark places of the heart where duplicity is the governing rule and murder the too-frequent result.

This was over of my favorites so far. We found out a little more about Kinsey‘s family and the case she is working in was great! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kloves2read J is one of my favorites too! But after I read T it was knocked down to #3 after M and T being #1. 3y
TamTracy @Kloves2read Good to know!!! I‘m excited to read them! 3y

Kinsey is hired to investigate the re-appearance of a man originally declared dead for an insurance payout to the widow. This is also the one where Kinsey discovers she has family other than her deceased parents and the aunt who raised her. Re-reading this also reminded me how dangerous the 1980s could be — if you had car trouble you had to walk miles to the nearest gas station or pay phone, as Kinsey does. I‘ve had to do that too 😓

Ruthiella I never had to walk too far for a pay phone (which I used without any worry about germs...also a bygone habit!) but I remember that era too! 4y
Kloves2read J is one of my favorites! ❤️ My fav series! I started X and realized I wasn‘t in the mood to ready another mystery. I‘ll go back to it soon. 4y
kspenmoll Are you going through the whole series? I would love to reread someday.... 4y

ValerieAndBooks @Kloves2read I‘m already on K ! Re-reading this series is about all my brain can mostly handle these days. I think as you near the end of a series, you either subconsciously or consciously slow down, knowing there‘s only a couple left. I‘m sure you‘ll enjoy X when you get back to it. 3y
ValerieAndBooks @kspenmoll I am indeed! For the last six months so far. It sure is a different experience reading them closer together than as they‘re released. But still enjoyable— hope you do it! 3y

Too much on my mind these days, so here I am again with Kinsey 🕵️

(This is a continuation of my re-read project of this series).

robinb I‘ve always meant to read this series but haven‘t yet. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y

I loved the side plot dealing with Kinsey‘s family. I‘m interested to see where that goes. The mystery in this one was a nice change of pace, too, with the case starting as more of a missing persons case.

This is my first book finished for #bookspinbonanza.

TheAromaofBooks I've heard lots of good things about this series! 4y
janeycanuck @TheAromaofBooks It has its ups and downs. There‘s some outdated thinking that is cringe-worthy now but generally are good. She‘s kept the books in the 80s so far (despite it now being the 90s when the ones I‘m on came out) and my favourite parts are always when she goes to the library to use a phone book! 4y
TheAromaofBooks haha when I was in college, I still had to use the pay phone every time I wanted to call home! 4y

I‘ve been reading a lot of shorter books lately, so I‘m nearly done with #litsyatoz ! Anyone have recommendations for J? I‘m doing a combination of title and last name so either is fair game :)

Deezi I haven‘t read J by Howard Jacobson, but it was recommended to me by a friend whose recs I trust. And it was shortlisted for the Booker, I think. 4y
LiteraryinLawrence A graphic novel by Victoria Jamieson, maybe? Or something by Joshilyn Jackson? 4y

Gradually working my way through the Sue Grafton alphabet. Kinsey investigates the disappearance of a con man who has recently been declared dead. As usual, she gets into some precarious situations. We also learn a bit more about Kinsey‘s family. #MountTBR

AvidReader25 These books are the perfect pallet cleanser for me. You always know what you were going to get and it‘s a nice break between books. 4y

#KinseyaWeek book 10

Solid 3⭐️

Interesting central mystery but even more interesting are the revelations about Kinsey herself and how she reacts to what she learns.

sisilia Omg you are doing a re-read. I haven‘t read Y 😌 I was hoping for a re-read before I finally hit the end. It‘s sad that we‘ll never get to Z 4y
BookwormM @sisilia it is Sue Grafton‘s passing that prompted my reread I can‘t remember how far I got originally I think around the N mark 4y
sisilia I miss her @BookwormM She replied to my message in Facebook years ago. I complimented her candid descriptions in B is for Burglar, and she claimed that she couldnt remember that she wrote it 😆 4y

I made it to the 10th book in the series! 😳 This story ended up flat for me. I didn't enjoy the resolution although I did like the introduction of Kinsey's extended and so far unknown family and her struggle to cope with the news and potential relationships. I'm excited to see where that goes! #Booked2019 #FemaleDetective

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. I loved this one. After a couple of slow movers, Grafton was back on track with this installment. On to K! #atoyreread

EDIT: One thing I‘ve noticed since the start and continues to bug me - the body shaming. See my GR review for more, if you‘re interested, but in this book in particular, a 140lb, 5‘10 woman is “a big woman”. IN WHAT UNIVERSE?!
