Barefoot Bingo Caller: A Memoir
Barefoot Bingo Caller: A Memoir | Antanas Sileika
7 posts | 1 read
A rollicking memoir through the shifting zeitgeist of the last five decades In The Barefoot Bingo Caller, Antanas Sileika finds what s funny and touching in the most unlikely places, from the bingo hall to the collapsing Soviet Union. He shares stories that span his attempts to shake off his suburban, ethnic, folk-dancing childhood to his divided allegiance as a Lithuanian-Canadian father. Antanas has a keen eye for social comedy, bringing to life such memorable characters as ageing beat poets, oblivious college students, the queen of the booze cans, and an obdurate porcupine. Passing through places as varied as the prime minister s office and the streets of Paris, these wry and moving dispatches on work and family, art, and identity are ones to be shared and savoured."

Is a bar really considered an odd place to read?

Only filled in two spaces in August, but I'm getting close to a cover-all! I've had a really hard time finding something interesting published in 2007. Anybody have any suggestions?? #lrc #litsyreadingchallenge

missevievelyn The first Kate Daniels book (Magic Bites) by Ilona Andrews was published in 07! Also The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfus. Blackbringer by Laini Taylor if you like fairies! And Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips is fun. That's some of what Goodreads says I've read & enjoyed published in 07! 7y
tea.n.books @missevievelyn Thanks so much! I've heard good things about Gods Behaving Badly and Laini Taylor. I'll check them all out! 😍 7y

Pickpick

I've found this week beyond stressful, and I've fallen behind in my Serial Reader and #gwtwreadalong I haven't been able to concentrate on much, but this book of essays helped. It was easy to dip into and out of. I do like how Sileika frames moments and articulates his thoughts. Haven't read him yet? The Woman in Bronze is a stunner.
