Mehso-so

Three quarters of this book are different plot lines – and even though I didn‘t put it down often I lost track and overview. Which I didn‘t during â€Die Seiten der Welt“. But maybe that‘s the crucial point, that by re-reading the trilogy before more of this book‘s plot would have been clear. I spent some time trying to remember the essentials of the series and maybe that hindered me in getting engaged.

“So-So†only for the trivia not for the plot.

The questions is why a magic item that allows to recognise the author‘s real intention behind his book/story shall be destroyed. The answer “We are […] critics. Who wants to know the author‘s intention? It‘s our task to decide what‘s well-made and important in a book – and what‘s miserable. We are who can judge and recognise the value of a text [not a magic item].“ (p. 237)

⬆ï¸â¬†ï¸â¬†ï¸ Clever and subtle but true in every respect. 😯

The story ain‘t as gripping as I hoped it would be.
But I like the details that link it to â€Die Seiten der Weltâ€. Fornax who might have gorged himself on books during the fire that destroyed the Alexandrine Library. Or he was cursed by a librarian. Who knowsâ“😂 (p. 222)

You guys remember how I yesterday immediately had a crush on the character Wisenheimerâ“🤔 In the novel he‘s named “Veterator†– and my Internet finally disclosed to me what I already assumed yesterday evening. (See picture above.)

It‘s Latin and means “cunning old birdâ€, “smart aleckâ€, “teaserâ€.

I think it‘s really funny and wittily thought out that throughout the book – or: so far in the story – the reader constantly encounters the London tube that is obviously under construction the time the novel is set in. It‘s an amusing anachronism that most characters talking about it are sceptical towards it … Just wind fast forward â© and imagine London (and or any other city that has one) without its Underground 🚇.

Catastrophic conditions.

While I closed all doors and windows to keep the mosquitoes 🦟 out when I now turn on the light to continue reading I listened to a German singer-songwriter and the text of one of her songs reminded me of @Sarah83 who always suffers when it‘s hot.

“I live at the very top and the rain first comes up to me when it falls.â€

Associations of a book nerd. 🤷ğŸ½â€â™€ï¸

Sarah83 Don't know the song, but it is pretty true. 😆💓 5y
Buechersuechtling @Sarah83 Don‘t know why but after all these years she‘s a musician by now she still seems to be kind of a hidden gem. Myself I was given this personal tip ten years ago. 5y
Sarah83 What kind of music is it? 5y
Buechersuechtling @Sarah83 Don‘t ask me such things. I‘m no expert by no means. Mostly I sort music like art, wine and cake. I divide into: “I like it.†and “I don‘t like it.†but I‘d say German singer-songwriter folk with witty texts that often tell a story or that often are subtle and that often contain clever puns. Is that _any_ helpfulâ“🤔 5y
Sarah83 I will google it 😆 5y

“It was getting dark when Mercy reached the former coach-house. The shabby building was set at a crossing where, not long ago, suicides was driven a dowel through the heart and where they afterwards were buried under the street.
There were many suicides in St Giles. And there were many man-shaped bumps on the street.†(p. 121)

⬆ï¸â¬†ï¸â¬†ï¸ I‘m sure this ain‘t fictional. 😶

Sarah83 Loved this description 💓 5y
Buechersuechtling @Sarah83 It‘s so ridiculous and creepy, both at the same time, that I‘m convinced it must be true. 5y
Sarah83 It really could 5y

Update: I‘m no friend of adding sugar or the likes to food and drinks – especially to tea – I‘m more the fan of a slightly bitter taste but in that case some tablets of sweetener made this tea taste way less weird. It has fennel in it.
Which is absolutely _not_ _for_ _me_.

After noon tea-reading.

(I‘m not a huge tea lover at all but over the past years so many different teas gathered in my cupboard that I decided I need to drink them away. I was annoyed by seeing all those open(ed) boxes. So it‘s tea, tea, tea for me for the next few days …)

Only one and a half pages old but I already have a crush on the character Wisenheimer. Might be he‘ll become an annoying sidekick or a traitor or villain – or he commits suicide by accident through a â€flammende Rede“ (only funny as German proverb: go down in flames because one‘s speech is so passionate it lights fire) …

But please, he is so wonderfully thought out. 💭

Well, I‘m through the prologue – and, sorry, I very much hope the story will raise my interest more. 🤷ğŸ½â€â™€ï¸

Folks, I might get old if I criticise abook‘s beginning because it reads like a showdown. 🤷ğŸ½â€â™€ï¸

But: What a brilliant idea to make women cry and then add their tissues as “secret ingredient†to the paper love stories are printed on because the tears improve the story‘s impact. 😃 Wonderful‼ï¸ğŸ˜ Where does he take all these ideas fromâ“🤔

Sarah83 Es ist ja auch nicht schlimm, dass er es so macht 🤩 5y

Look 👀, what my neighbour left on my doorstep. 💗

A very huge, heart-felt “Thank you†goes out to lovely @Sarah83 who is the generous donor (and did great effort)â€¼ï¸ Thank you so muchâ£ï¸ğŸ¤— I was positively surprised and _so_happy_ 🤩 it arrived so early.

I plan to start it this weekend. If I‘m lucky I will do so with a glass of homemade peach ice tea which I will brew with my significant other tomorrow. ğŸ¹

Erofan Beautiful cover 😠5y
Buechersuechtling @Erofan Yes, it fits in really well with the covers of â€Die Seiten der Welt“. 5y

Pickpick

Just finished this beauty. ğŸ˜ğŸ¤©ğŸ˜ğŸ¤© @scripturient did you like it?
For all the others, it's about books, bookshops, magic and it takes place in Victorian England. 😊 Guess who bought already the second part?!?
To be true, it is between a pick and a so-so. There are some phrases, which appear quite to often in this book, so I hope this gets better in book two. ğŸ˜

Sarah83 @Buechersuechtling should I send to you now? 5y

scripturient @Sarah83 Yes, I liked it but for me it was more a so-so. Loved the atmosphere but the phrases you mentioned just annoyed me a lot. 🤣 5y
AlaMich I hate it when authors reuse the same words and phrases over and over. I get more and more irritated until I can‘t enjoy the book anymore. 5y
BooknerdsLife What a gorgeous edition!!! ğŸ˜ğŸ’™ 5y
Sarah83 @BooknerdsLife it is such a great book 😠5y
Sarah83 @AlaMich you are so right 😭 5y
Sarah83 @Buechersuechtling hey.
Buechersuechtling @Sarah83 Super. Vielen lieben Dankâ£ï¸ Ich freu mich schon. 5y

Life could definitely be worse. 🤩ğŸ˜

Katerina I met Hohlbein at a convention once a few years ago. He should not be promoting his own books. I have never heared a more spiritless reader 😆 I hope he doesn't do his own audiobooks :P 5y
