What a lousy book. 120 pages and maybe 30 were of this case. Very chopped up and hard to follow. Let‘s try to shorten it. Rose was from Hungary and moved to the neighborhood in Detroit. Her husband died, leaving her with 3 sons, so she opened a boarding house. It was during the Depression, so most of her boarders were unemployed or worked odd jobs. One of them climbed a ladder to repair a window, fell, and died. Rose and her son had 2 trials. 2š‘

Kaye * The majority of the book told a tiny snippet about Detroit history, then about the judge, then about the crooked prosecutor, then about illegal whiskey...just on and on piles of boring.......it would have been much better to stick to one topic and follow it through. Kaye Yes, she was seen as a strange person since she barely knew English and couldn‘t converse much with people. Her husband died from Carbon monoxide poisoning so people said she had a hand in that. Several men who lived in her boarding house died but there wasn‘t much info on their ages or health or cause of death. It sounded as if people just had rough lives during those years. She wore black (mourning) so due to all that she got called a witch. * 2y

Kaye * she also had a guy testify that she pushed the man out the window of the house rather than him falling from a ladder. She had a lousy lawyer who could have easily proved she wouldn‘t have had the strength to push a man of his size out the window. The police grilled her for 100 hours. She could barely speak or understand English. Not enough info to make a call that she was guilty. Her second trial she had an interpreter and a lady lawyer. 2y

Kaye @OrangeMooseReads Ran out of space. She was found not guilty the second time. But ended up staying in jail for like 12 years. See above for complete answer. I think she got a bum deal and couldn‘t speak up for herself. Most of the men had a little life insurance and put her name as beneficiary mainly because they owed her past rent plus had no one else to leave it to. Just not enough info to make a proper call on it. Unorganized story. (edited) 2y
