Granta 117
Granta 117: Horror | John Freeman
1 post | 1 read | 1 to read
In Rajesh Parameswarans short story, a tiger escapes from the zoo and narrates its adventures as it terrorizes a suburban neighbourhood. Nic Dunlop recounts his meeting with a Cambodian mass-murderer who has converted to Christianity and attempts to atone for his sins. Mark Doty ruminates on a close encounter between Walt Whitman and Bram Stoker, the grandfather of modern horror. All forms of horror whether they begin in fright or disgust involve an extraordinary confrontation. A surprise. In essays, reporting and short fiction, this issue of Granta will reveal the many ways we can be startled into horror.

T is for TBR!
These are all of the Stephen King books I own that I need to read. I plan to start The Gunslinger next month for the #EpickaTetRead #TheDarkTowerChapterAWeek with @MinDea and @TricksyTails ! What should I read first after that?
#KingAtoZ
@GarthRanzz
Different Seasons
Gerald‘s Game
The Long Walk
Roadwork
The Talisman
Hearts in Atlantis
Just After Sunset
The Dune
The Gunslinger
The Tommyknockers
Rose Madder
Dreamcatcher

GarthRanzz Out of everything there my recommendation is The Long Walk! 6y
Sweettartlaura I say The Talisman - Jack in The Talisman is most likely Jake in the Dark Tower, so it connects. (And if that doesn‘t make sense to you yet, it will 😉) 6y
PaperbackPirate @GarthRanzz The Bachman books I‘ve read so far are some of my favorite so I look forward to it. Thank you for the recommendation! 6y

PaperbackPirate @Sweettartlaura Should I read it before The Gunslinger? 6y
Sweettartlaura No, you don‘t have to. Not sure how familiar you are with it all, and don‘t want to spoil anything. Let‘s say this: there are other worlds than this. So who someone is in this world/what their journey is/what their fate is is NOT necessarily the same in another world. So knowing Jake‘s story won‘t interfere with reading Jack‘s, & vice versa. 6y
Bookish_AF I would say The Long Walk and Different Seasons! I have yet to read The Talisman myself! 6y
TricksyTails I second @GarthRanzz ‘s suggestion! 😁👍 6y
PaperbackPirate I really want to read Different Seasons for The Body. Thank you for sharing your suggestions @whippoorwill815 ! 6y
PaperbackPirate Thank you @Sweettartlaura ! I think that was the perfect amount of information without being too spoilery! 😘 6y
Sweettartlaura Oooh, did you read it???😀 6y
PaperbackPirate @Sweettartlaura I didn‘t. But I started The Gunslinger & I think that bit of information makes me less anxious about not understanding what‘s going on. 6y
Sweettartlaura Ahhh, excellent! And if it makes you feel better, King claims to not have realized how it all ties together - all his work, not just the Dark Tower series - for at least two decades. So just sit back & enjoy each one for what they are. I‘m jealous you get to discover some of these for the first time 😍 6y
