Vanity Fair 1848
Vanity Fair 1848 | William Makepeace Thackeray
Vanity Fair is an English novel by William Makepeace Thackeray which follows the lives of Becky Sharp and Emmy Sedley amid their friends and families during and after the Napoleonic Wars. It was first published as a 19-volume monthly serial from 1847 to 1848, carrying the subtitle Pen and Pencil Sketches of English Society, reflecting both its satirisation of early 19th-century British society and the many illustrations drawn by Thackeray to accompany the text. It was published as a single volume in 1848 with the subtitle A Novel without a Hero, reflecting Thackeray's interest in deconstructing his era's conventions regarding literary heroism. It is sometimes considered the "principal founder" of the Victorian domestic novel. The story is framed as a puppet play and the narrator, despite being an authorial voice, is notoriously unreliable. Late in the narrative, it is revealed that the entire account has been 2nd- or 3rd-hand gossip the writer picked up "years ago" from Lord Tapeworm, British charge d'affaires in one of the minor German states and relative of several of the other aristocrats in the story but none of the main characters: "the famous little Becky puppet", "the Amelia Doll", "the Dobbin Figure", "the Little Boys", and "the Wicked Nobleman, on which no expense has been spared". Despite her many stated faults and still worse ones admitted to have been passed over in silence, Becky emerges as the "hero"-what is now called an antihero-in place of Amelia because Thackeray is able to illustrate that "the highest virtue a fictional character can possess is interest."The serial was a popular and critical success; the novel is now considered a classic and has inspired several film adaptations. In 2003, Vanity Fair was listed at No. 122 on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's best-loved books.PLOT:The story is framed by its preface and coda as a puppet show taking place at a fair; the cover illustration of the serial installments was not of the characters but of a troupe of comic actors at Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park. The narrator, variously a show manager or writer, appears at times within the work itself and is highly unreliable, repeating a tale of gossip at second or third hand.Rebecca Sharp ("Becky") is a strong-willed, cunning, moneyless, young woman determined to make her way in society. After leaving school, Becky stays with Amelia Sedley ("Emmy"), who is a good-natured, simple-minded young girl, of a wealthy London family. There, Becky meets the dashing and self-obsessed Captain George Osborne (Amelia's betrothed) and Amelia's brother Joseph ("Jos") Sedley, a clumsy and vainglorious but rich civil servant home from the East India Company. Hoping to marry Sedley, the richest young man she has met, Becky entices him, but she fails. George Osborne's friend Captain William Dobbin loves Amelia, but only wishes her happiness, which is centred on George.Becky Sharp says farewell to the Sedley family and enters the service of the crude and profligate baronet Sir Pitt Crawley, who has engaged her as a governess to his daughters. Her behaviour at Sir Pitt's house gains his favour, and after the premature death of his second wife, he proposes marriage to her. However he finds that she has secretly married his second son, Captain Rawdon Crawley.....William Makepeace Thackeray (18 July 1811 - 24 December 1863) was an English novelist of the 19th century. He is known for his satirical works, particularly Vanity Fair, a panoramic portrait of English society....

I've finally finished Vanity Fair!

It was a bit wordy at times, but overall a great book with fantastic character studies and a fitting ending.

As usual, thanks for the daily posts @BarkingMadRead and all the comments and insights #pemberlittens #hashtagbrigade I loved reading this with all of you 💕

BarkingMadRead Very wordy! Somewhat Dickensian, which didn‘t help me lol because I was also reading Pickwick 🤣🤣 7mo

Overall, I enjoyed this long listen. It has some really entertaining sections, several cliffhangers, and also some ridiculously long sections. I was often amused by the narrator‘s asides to the reader and some incredibly odd name choices. All the main characters annoyed me at times, but I was fully invested in their stories as well.

@BarkingMadRead Thanks for another great #PemberLittens #HashtagBrigade readalong!

“All is vanity, nothing is fair.“ After 912 pages and 67 chapters, that pretty much is the main theme. I can see why this is Thackeray's masterpiece as he scathingly criticizes the norms in early 19th-century England between rich vs. poor, women vs. men, religion vs. non-religion ... nobody is immune from his satire. A different type of narrator, too, where you felt like he was addressing you personally for a LONG story. ⬇️

dabbe He could have chopped off some chapters, though, and kept to the main plot because it was overwhelmingly verbose at times. Overall, I am glad I read it and immensely enjoyed most of it. I never would have read it in one month, though, without the #pemberlittens and @BarkingMadRead's hilarious hashtag summaries.

I believe this also qualifies as a #Chunkster, too! @Amiable

Amiable It certainly does! Great job! I need to read this one again. I read it in high school but that is basically an entire lifetime ago and I remember nothing. 😀 8mo
dabbe @Amiable I can sum it up for you: Everybody's vain, everybody wins and loses, some die, some don't. How's that? 😃 8mo
Amiable @dabbe Perfect! And I‘ll sum up “Les Miserables” for those who haven‘t read it: “Stop going back to Paris, dumbass! That‘s where the cop who is looking for you is.” 😀 8mo
dabbe @Amiable 🤣🤣🤣 I'd sum it up by saying “Watch the movie or see the show! Lots of singing and dancing to make it 'less miserables' instead of 'les miserables!“ 😃 8mo

dabbe So, no happy ending for Dobbin and Emmy. In Jane Austen's world, things might have been different, but not in this satirical and maddening world of Vanity Fair. At least she and her dad won't be poor anymore. Glad you finally showed some compassion, Jos. #geez 8mo

Cuilin “no just indifferent” ouch! We still have a few more chapters @Dabbe maybe we‘ll get an Austen ending?? As for Sedley he reminds me of Del Boy from Only Fools and Horses. Also am I right in thinking that Jos has his own house in London, so Amelia and her parents could‘ve been living there???? 8mo
Daisey Glad we decided to go ahead and finish this before the end of the month! I listened to the extra chapter when I got home. So wish that Amelia could learn enough of the truth to realize Dobbin is so much better but not enough to completely devastate her. 8mo
Bookwormjillk Poor Dobbin. That was painful. 8mo
AnnR I thought Amelia would soften up more towards Dobbin. Now I feel she is just taking him for granted. 8mo

TheAromaofBooks Like I want to be mad at Amelia, but I feel like she is at least trying to do her best for other people instead of thinking of herself. Her biggest mistake was falling in love with the person she was literally told to fall in love with her entire life, so it's even kind of hard to fault her for that. Osborne Sr gloating about her being poor and broken was absolutely infuriating. 8mo

BarkingMadRead @mcctrish I have serious anxiety over the fact that Emmy handed over all that money! He‘s going to blow it all! 8mo

Bookwormjillk @TheBookHippie 🤣😂🤣😂 8mo
Bookwormjillk Also do we know where Joss is? 8mo
dabbe Holy guacamole, Batman! Chapter 47 was the most BORING chapter I have read in a long time. Just so we get that Lord Steyne is a jerk and his son is locked up? We're at the point now where I just want Thakeray to finish the plots on our characters, especially Dobbin and Amelia. Sheesh! 🥱 8mo
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish there‘s gotta be some hanky panky i would think, otherwise why give her allllll that money?!? 8mo
Cuilin Tom Eaves could write his own gossip column. As for Becky and Styne. Something‘s about to happen there. And the jewelry from Pitt!! 8mo
willaful Poor Lady Jane -- only the second nice character in the book, other than the kids I guess, and she's being screwed over by Becky. On the other hand, #jointheparty. :-\

Anyone else wondering if poor Rawden might not even be the father of his kid?
8mo
AnnR @willaful - I hadn't considered Rawden might not be the father but now that you mention it. Hmmm.... She really is one of the most horribly selfish and manipulative female characters I've encountered in a book. Right up there with Scarlett O'Hara and Undine Spragg in 8mo
Bookwormjillk @dabbe yes!!! So boring. I actually listened to it twice and still don‘t know what happened. 8mo
Daisey @dabbe @Bookwormjillk So glad I wasn‘t the only one completely bored by that chapter to the point of not absorbing any information. 8mo
TheAromaofBooks I skimmed most of that chapter. I just kept thinking... how is any of this remotely relevant?! Who are these people??? @dabbe @Bookwormjillk @Daisey 8mo
dabbe @Bookwormjillk I had to read the Shmoop summary to get the gist of it! 🤣🤣🤣 8mo
dabbe @TheAromaofBooks Exactly! I kept thinking, “Get to Becky, Amelia, Dobbin, somebody I know!“ 🤣🤣🤣 8mo
willaful @TheAromaofBooks Same! I decided to consider myself creating a “good parts version“ like with The Princess Bride. 😂 8mo

BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk ugh! Right?!? She is NOT responsible for her father‘s poor choices! 8mo
dabbe The last we saw Dobbin he was practically running all the way from India to England. Where the heck is he? And it's getting worse seeing how much Amelia vicariously lives through George. This can't end well, can it? 8mo
Cuilin @Dabbe The Sedley‘s money issues always seem to affect Amelia. I feel she‘ll give up George and I agree that can‘t be good? What is Dobbin going to do about it? 8mo
Daisey @dabbe Yes! I kind of hate how this story jumps from character to character when I really want to know more. We went from Dobbin determined to come back to it feeling like time was passing with no more mention of him. Guess I‘ll just have to wait and see, but I‘m definitely nervous about Amelia‘s choices. 8mo

I don't know whether to feel glad that R jr. caught on to her or sorry for him. At least he won't have any unrealistic expectations anymore.
8mo
AnnR I feel sorry for Rawdon Jr. Becky is just so cruel and seems to have zero maternal feelings. She has gone well beyond looking out for herself by ripping off Briggs. What a piece of work. It's getting difficult to find any likeable characters. 8mo

AnnR Speaking of adaptations, I started watching the ITV (2018) version last week and got through episode 3.The acting is good. The set and costumes are wonderful. mcctrish #emmyandbeckymanipulatingallthemenandpissingoffallthewomen @TheBookHippie this is totally a soap opera 🤣 Rawdon Sr has turned out lovely ( yet spineless) I feel so bad for all the people who do their bidding and for Dobbin, Amelia and her dad are so clueless as to where the money is coming from 🤦🏻‍♀️ maybe Dobbin‘s wife will put her foot down 🤣🤣🤣 (edited) 8mo
willaful Ugh, the Crawleys back in the next chapter. I wish they'd Crawl into a hole and stay there. 8mo
willaful Re the poison: I feel like Amelia missed the perfect retort to her mother. “Yes, you nursed five children and buried three, you're obviously no danger to a child!“ (Not that it was probably her fault at all, but still!) dabbe I'm also amazed at how these people can live so high and mightily when they don't have much $. The amount of debt they've accrued is unfathomable to me, yet they go on drinking, gambling, and partying! Though I seem to recall my rowdier days in college where I could get by on a night of partying with just a few bucks. #shhh 🤫 8mo
willaful @dabbe it's so stressful to me! But apparently once you're in the right circles, even now, you can get away with a lot. For a time, at any rate.

Can someone explain the extremely pissed off General to me? I didn't have a clue about what was happening in that whole scene. Perhaps I read it too late at night.
8mo
BarkingMadRead @willaful he was crushing on Becky and she was flirting with George 8mo
eeclayton @Cuilin @mcctrish I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to dislike Amelia. I kind of feel sorry for her, but can't really empathize with her. It's interesting how useless she is as George's wife even though she's been raised to fill that role. 8mo

dabbe @willaful Lordy, ain't that the truth! 🤣 8mo

Cuilin @Daisey @eeclayton @mcctrish I maybe a bit harsh on Dobbin, his heart is in the right place. I just question his judgment, being so loyal to George? I‘m hoping his.character arc includes severing ties with G. 8mo
Cuilin @mcctrish I think so, Amelia‘s developing awareness of her husband‘s character is so numbing causing her apathy. 8mo
TheAromaofBooks I've definitely developed a soft spot for Rawden. I love that he seems completely aware of the fact that his wife is kind of a terrible person but he just admires the heck out of her smarts 😂 8mo
eeclayton @Cuilin @mcctrish that's a great point, but also, she has zero coping strategies. All her life, everything has been mapped out for her, to the point of who to fall in love with.
