Patrick Melrose: The Novels | Edward St. Aubyn
5 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
NOW COLLECTED INTO ONE VOLUME FOR THE FIRST TIME, ALL FIVE INSTALLMENTS OF EDWARD ST. AUBYN'S CELEBRATED PATRICK MELROSE NOVELS Soon to be a Showtime TV series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Blythe Danner Edward St. Aubyn has penned one of the most acclaimed series of the decade with the Patrick Melrose Novels. Now you can read all five novels in one volume: Never Mind, Bad News, Mother's Milk, Some Hope, and At Last. By turns harrowing and hilarious, this ambitious novel cycle dissects the English upper class. Edward St. Aubyn offers his reader the often darkly funny and self-loathing world of privilege as we follow Patrick Melrose's story of abuse, addiction, and recovery from the age of five into early middle age. The Patrick Melrose Novels are "a memorable tour de force" (The New York Times Book Review) by one of "the most brilliant English novelists of his generation" (Alan Hollinghurst).

Today‘s book haul:

The A.B.C. Murders by Agatha Christie
Patrick Melrose by Edward St. Aubyn (5 book omnibus)
Dissolution by CJ Sansom
Dark Fire by CJ Sansom
Lamentation by CJ Sansom
L.E.L. By Lucasta Miller (biography of 19th century poet Letitia Elizabeth Landon)

I‘ve been wanting to read Sansom for years, and an Instagram friend recommended the Patrick Melrose novels to me.

The edition I read from the library last year didn't have "At Last." Happy I'll have a chance to finish the series with this omnibus I found at Mr. K's today.

Finally took the plunge. Finished the first novella. Not quite prepared for how dark this has turned out to be. So far, St Aubyn‘s prose cuts like a razor...

Mehso-so

This is actually 5 books in one cover. It follows the life of Patrick from age 5 to about age 45. Reading it was kind of a slog. Neither of Patrick‘s parents is capable and his father is downright sadistic. The books were made into a limited series on Showtime, with Benedict Cumberbatch as Patrick. I think I would rather see the series. There‘s a lot of dark humor here. I give it 3 out of 5 stars.

It was very....boring. I‘m just going to say it; it was boring. I‘ve heard great things about the miniseries so I‘ll go watch that instead.
