Pickpick

Thank you @SerialReader for this small gem by Willa Cather. The passage above is an example of her beautiful, clean style in setting the scene & creating atmosphere. Written in 1905, this is the brief story of Paul, an aesthete who finds his gray, dull, middle-class life unbearable & longs for the beauty of the theater & the opera halls. There is a suggestion that he's gay in a time & place where it was impossible to be himself. Sad & poignant.
