Nancy and her friends must try to figure out why a girl is acting strangely after visiting a haunted house in this sixteenth book of the Nancy Drew Diaries, a fresh approach to the classic mystery series. Nancys classmate, Willa, needs her help. Willa is convinced something is terribly wrong with her friend Izzy, but everyone has dismissed Willas concerns, saying its just teen angst. But Willa thinks its more than that; she thinks Izzy is possessed. It all started when Willa and Izzy snuck into an abandoned house with some of their friends. After running around and exploring, Willa went in to the basement and found Izzy staring into space. Izzy was conscious, but she was acting weirdshe wouldnt speak and she didnt seem to recognize Willa. And when Izzy finally woke up from her trance, she had no memory of the previous few hours. Since then, Izzys continued to act strangely. Shes usually funny and easygoing, but now shes high strung and has intense fits. Once she even threatened to hurt Willa. Nancy is sure theres a rational explanation for all of this and has a feeling shell find it at the haunted house. But what she finds has her questioning her resolve. Could Willa be right? Is Izzy possessed by the ghost of Heliotrope Lane?

Mehso-so

Since I listened to the first Nancy Drew book this weekend, I‘d thought I‘d give a book from the most recent Nancy Drew series a try. Going into it, I thought I would like Nancy being the 1st person narrator, since the traditional 3rd person narrator always seemed to make Nancy seem too good to be true. I‘m not sure I like just how much this narration style humanizes her. It feels odd to see Nancy so scared & confused at times. Continued below....

Chelsibno Then I wonder how much of that is just my preconceived notions of how I think Nancy should think under pressure. Would I feel differently if I had read books from her POV first? Probably. Like most of the later series, this one does a lot of updates to the setting & characters. I liked how smartphones figured into the sleuthing in this story. 5y
Sace I admire your courage! I don't have the nerve to try an updated Drew. I can only stick when the classic Nancy! (though I do believe even my "classic" Nancys are updated from the 1930's.) 5y
Chelsibno @RestlessFickleBookHoarder I don‘t blame you! It‘s always a bit odd to see a character that you have rooted in a certain time setting put in a more modern one. You are correct! In the 1950s, Harriet Stratemeyer Adams revised most of the original books from the 1930‘s, many of which were originally written by Mildred Wirt Benson. She changed several aspects of the story & even Nancy‘s personality. Makes me wonder how fans of the original reacted. 5y
