The Big Big Sea
The Big Big Sea | Martin Waddell, Jennifer Eachus

A girl and her mother wade in the sea by moonlight. This peaceful first-person narrative is simply told and its illustrations are dark and misty, yet joyful. Ages 3-up.

I‘m a little emotional right now. This was my daughter‘s and my book when she was little. She just brought it home from the library and asked me to record it for her. “I‘ll always remember just Mama and me and the night that we walked by the big big sea.” She‘s 27, and our copy got lost long ago.

Mother‘s Day post (featuring a mother-daughter/literary tattoo)! 👑 I tagged one of my favorite thematic picture books, which always reminds me of my mom, since it depicts a little blonde girl & her mama sharing a love of the ocean on a quiet, moonlit night.

Happy Day to those who are celebrating! Hope your daughters/sons/puppies/kittens/bunnies/snakelets are good to you today! 🖤

paulfrankspencer Do you know where the quote comes from? 5y

paulfrankspencer @monalyisha Sounds Christian-y. Google didn't give me a good answer immediately, so I'll chalk it up as a mystery. 5y
monalyisha @paulfrankspencer I concur — though I‘ll gladly take it out of context. 😉 5y

Amazing book!

I‘d never seen this before today, but fell in love with it right away.

The art is moody and very unique.

The story will recall strong memories of
-your feet sinking into wet sand as a wave pulls the ground away from underneath you
-sharing a secret with your mother
-being carried in someone‘s arms
-doing something slightly forbidden (and therefore magical) like night swimming
