Stay Sexy & Dont Get Murdered
Stay Sexy & Dont Get Murdered: The Definitive How-To Guide | Karen Kilgariff, Georgia Hardstark
152 posts | 138 read | 3 reading | 97 to read
The highly anticipated first book by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark, the voices behind the #1 hit podcast My Favorite Murder! Sharing never-before-heard stories ranging from their struggles with depression, eating disorders, and addiction, Karen and Georgia irreverently recount their biggest mistakes and deepest fears, reflecting on the formative life events that shaped them into two of the most followed voices in the nation. In Stay Sexy & Dont Get Murdered, Karen and Georgia focus on the importance of self-advocating and valuing personal safety over being nice or helpful. They delve into their own pasts, true crime stories, and beyond to discuss meaningful cultural and societal issues with fierce empathy and unapologetic frankness. My Favorite Murder started as a way for Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark to work through their fears. Now its a worldwide community.... Even its darkest moments are lightened by Karen and Georgia's effortlessly funny banter and genuine empathy. This was not what I expected. Rather than true crime musings, it‘s musings on how the pair of podcasters got to where they are today. A fun collection of stories and I highly recommend listening to it on audiobook (done by the authors themselves). 4⭐️

Was kinda disappointed with this one. I expected it to be more like their pod cast and not a self help/memoir. If I had gone into it knowing that I think I would have enjoyed it more. The ladies are hilarious as always and it was interesting to learn more about them. I just wish there was more murder.

Unpopular opinion time! 🙋🏻‍♀️ I listened to this on audiobook and was a little disappointed. I think the title is a bit misleading and I‘ve never listened to their podcast, although I do consider myself a true crime junkie. The self help aspect was a little grating, with long passages about their childhood memories that didn‘t add much to the story imo. The true crime parts were interesting. Maybe it wouldn‘t have bothered me as much if I had ⬇️

JenlovesJT47 Read it with my eyeballs, but I was glad when it ended. 😬 That being said, I‘d still give their podcast a listen at least once, maybe I‘ll like that better. 2.5⭐️ #audiobook #truecrime #memoir #selfhelp #podcast 2y
Patchshank I think you have to be a fan of the podcast to really like the book. But a lot of fans where let down by it too since it wasn't really true crime based. I enjoyed it, but i do think they should write some actual true books. I think that would be interesting. 2y

This was so heartwarming. I listened to it via their audiobook which was so lovely. It included some improv funnies, live recordings of chapter readings, and Karen crying which made me cry. I loved this book so much. It was so vulnerable and I felt like I was sitting around the table talking with my friends.

MyBookLife I love their podcast, but I haven‘t read this book yet. 2y
abbyreadz I recommend the audiobook! You feel like they‘re on the pod again. 2y

I've never listened to this podcast, but I heard good things about the book and decided to try it.

The book was very different than I expected as far as the subject matter was concerned, but I really enjoyed it. The authors give readers a look into what brought them together and how they started their podcast. They open up about their fears and anxieties, while also giving a few helpful hints on how to keep safe and not get murdered. 😉

DavidDiamond Love the podcast! Give it a listen! 3y

Last year when this book came out, I was on a self-imposed book buying ban and it was the one book I was ready to purchase as soon as it was available. Shortly after New Years day this year, my husband came home with this tucked under his arm. He told me he was proud of me for making a commitment and sticking to it as he handed it to me, still wrapped in the Half Price Books bag. I was so excited! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

WorldsOkayestStepMom I had been listening to MFM for more than a year, and had even met them after their live show in Austin, TX in 2018! I have their autographs in Michelle McNamara's book! Vince took my picture with them! I was able to finish the book in less than 24 hours, and their voices came through in each of their sections. I loved learning about each of them and what led them to create MFM! This book is going on my tray-sures bookshelf. #SSDGM 4y

This was good. It sounded like a really long podcast which makes sense. These 2 women have had interesting lives and they are badass. If I were a podcast person I would definitely listen to ‘My Favorite Murder‘. I believe I had heard of/knew of all the cases they mentioned in the course of the book.
They were good to listen to and I liked the book.

riversong153 I couldn‘t get in to this one. It wasn‘t just that it sounded like a podcast, I felt like the topic was misleading. I also felt like much of it was first world problems which isn‘t inherently unentertaining but it just didn‘t work for me. 4y
OrangeMooseReads @riversong153 I can see that. The title is misleading completely agree. 4y

This book is one giant projection party forced on the readers, as they get a military style dress down from Karen. She bulldozes through your hard won softness and tells you in third person how you suck, and then gives advice for a very specific one type of person. Georgia‘s parts were better, but still unhelpful. This book had no clear direction, and was a complete waste of time and money.

ImperfectCJ I didn't dislike this one as much as you did, but your review is spot-on. "Projection party" in particular is excellent. I love negative reviews! 4y

While I didn‘t learn any tips on how to not get murdered (or how to stay sexy), I did learn a lot about the anxiety and trauma that each podcaster deals with. More of a memoir than a continuation of the podcast or summary of what they‘ve learned from their study of murderers.

So different from what I thought it would be! It wasn‘t the same tone as their podcast, which can be quite snarky (not knocking that!). I found this audiobook to be very heartwarming, thoughtful, and truthful. On top of everything Karen and Georgia are always, always grateful. Here are the books at which I hope to chip away during the #MrBook1inaMillion extravaganza. The tagged book is my audio choice for this #Readathon. My kids/schedule/way of life have me reading in little bits here and there rather than in big chunks so I usually just estimate my reading time, but I might play with keeping a timer this time, just for kicks. 😉

veritysalter I‘ve read Horrorstör - it‘s a fabulous horror farce and SSDGM was good, although I misunderstood and thought it was about true crime, not a biography (although still interesting to learn more about K&G). Happy reading ♥️ 4y
ImperfectCJ @veritysalter Thanks for the tips! I tried Horrostör a couple of years ago and couldn't get into it, but I read a couple of reviews recently that made me want to try it again. As far as Stay Sexy goes, I have mixed feelings about the podcast and about memoirs in general, but the reviews have left me curious. I guess we'll see how it goes! 4y

Okay so this isn‘t actually a book about murders (well, there‘s two in there but they‘re not the main point). However, it does have some great life advice from two women who have lived through some *stuff*. I really liked the advice they gave and the personal stories. There are definitely some quotes that will stick with me forever, so thank you Karen and Georgia. And as always STAY SEXY, AND DON‘T! GET! MURDERED!!

Love me some Karen and Georgia! Their generous displays of vulnerability through their emotionally sincere anecdotes and their candid advice were charming, refreshing, and showed a genuine appreciation of and concern for their dedicated MFM podcast audience. Lots of self-awareness, lots of desire to learn, improve, and share that growth.

This was an enjoyable read (audiobook) and it was filled with interesting stories to hold my attention. What I didn‘t realize was that this book is not a novel, its not one suspenseful murder; it‘s a collection of thoughts & life lessons from the authors, with murder mysteries along the way. The authors talk about feminism in relation to our current lives and how it relates to murders of the past, which as a radical feminist, I‘m all about.
