Sixteen-year-old Valentine is devastated by the death of her boyfriend in a high-school football game. She stops going to school, quits seeing her friends and won't leave her bed. After Valentine's accidental drug overdose, her desperate mother takes her on a jungle trek in Thailand. In the mountains north of Chiang Mai, Valentine meets Lin, a young elephant keeper with a mysterious past. After stumbling on an elephant massacre, Valentine and Lin find themselves running for their lives with an orphan calf they vow to save. In the safety of their growing friendship, Lin speaks of his dark past as a child soldier, kidnapped into the brutal Burmese army. He confesses to acts that Valentine isn't sure she can forgive. As she digs deep for compassion, Valentine is forced to confront herself. With newfound courage, she faces a choice: to hide from life forever or become who she wants to be.

Thank you Netgalley and Orca Books for providing a copy of this book for an honest review.

When Valentines boyfriend passes away she has a hard time dealing with her feelings and emotions. After overdosing on some pills Valentine's mom decides a mom and daughter trip to go traveling through the Thai Mountains would do her daughter some good.

BookNightOwl This book deals with a lot of issues such as grief, animal cruelty, rape, murder and even global issues. Even though this book is a work of fiction there is a lot of nonfiction through out the book such as kid soldiers and the government. I liked how informative it was along with its poetic words in the story. I also enjoyed the mother daughter relationship in this book.

The story of a teen who is drowning in grief. In an attempt to help her mom arranges a trip to Thailand. The trip is a hiking tour through the wilderness. The descriptions of the scenery in Thailand were amazing. The book was also spiritual, with discussions of Buddhism and forgiveness. I loved the storyline with the baby elephant. It was both uplifting and devastating.

I enjoyed reading this book. I feel like it will stay with me a long time.
