Way We Eat Now: How the Food Revolution Has Transformed Our Lives, Our Bodies, and Our World
Way We Eat Now: How the Food Revolution Has Transformed Our Lives, Our Bodies, and Our World | Bee Wilson
6 posts | 5 read | 18 to read
An award-winning food writer takes us on a global tour of what the world eats--and shows us how we can change it for the betterFood is one of life's great joys. So why has eating become such a source of anxiety and confusion?Bee Wilson shows that in two generations the world has undergone a massive shift from traditional, limited diets to more globalized ways of eating, from bubble tea to quinoa, from Soylent to meal kits. Paradoxically, our diets are getting healthier and less healthy at the same time. For some, there has never been a happier food era than today: a time of unusual herbs, farmers' markets, and internet recipe swaps. Yet modern food also kills--diabetes and heart disease are on the rise everywhere on earth. This is a book about the good, the terrible, and the avocado toast. A riveting exploration of the hidden forces behind what we eat, The Way We Eat Now explains how this food revolution has transformed our bodies, our social lives, and the world we live in.

Really fascinating, sensitive, well written bit of food journalism about how lots of different bits of modern western globalised food culture contribute to people not knowing how to interact with food. I‘ve always had an odd relationship with food and I found it so helpful listening to this and knowing it‘s not just me being confused for no reason. If you struggle to navigate between ‘clean eating‘ and ‘junk‘ this might help

Lindy I enjoyed this too. There‘s a bit of overlap in the book I‘ve just finished: 4y
Emilymdxn @lindy fantastic! I love food writing like this, I‘ve stacked that and loved your posts about it 4y

#weekendreads @rachelsbrittain

1. Tagged book on audio and The Possessed by Elif Batuman on kindle

2. On litsy Losing Earth and a couple other books about climate change, and in person Bluebeard‘s Egg by Margaret Atwood and a couple other books with fairy tale images for a friend who just loved the bloody chamber

3. Music - Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen or the National. Art - genuinely no idea, I‘m a beginner enjoying all of it atm

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I love the Impressionist period of art... but I also love how much art I‘ve been exposed to on Instagram. I‘ve found so many artists (especially women artists) who are working today through online challenges like #mermay (a mermaid a day in May) and #inktober (a drawing a day in ink in October) - it‘s amazing! 4y

“The less appealing aspect of clean eating is a tone of moralism that threatens to undermine the pleasure of everyday meals.”

I‘m glad Bee Wilson addresses the topic of clean eating. I remember how, when I first encountered the term, I was totally baffled about its meaning.

#TBRtemptation post 5! Recently released. The award-winning food writer explores contemporary food climate. How did we get here—where we can get strawberries in winter and find squid ink on store shelves—and what costs result from our easier-than-ever access to the wide range food available. What‘s the relationship between food and culture? Is there a balance? How have ingredients and processes changed over time? #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Ain't it, though.

Weaponxgirl Yes! I hate the idea that the individual is to blame all on their own. There are plenty of reasons why people find it hard to eat well including food deserts, time when working several jobs to make ends meet, skills and money. It‘s ridiculous how cheap bad for you food is due to subsidies ect. 5y

So glad I opened the package that the 30 pound bag of dog food was in — I‘d forgotten that I‘d preordered this book. Love love love Bee Wilson.
