Self-Improvement
Self-Improvement: An Essay in Kantian Ethics | Robert N. Johnson
6 posts
Is there any moral obligation to improve oneself, to foster and develop various capacities in oneself? From a broadly Kantian point of view, Self-Improvement defends the view that there is such an obligation and that it is an obligation that each person owes to him or herself. The defence addresses a range of arguments philosophers have mobilized against this idea, including the argument that it is impossible to owe anything to yourself, and the view that an obligation to improve onself is overly 'moralistic'. Robert N. Johnson argues against Kantian universalization arguments for the duty of self-improvement, as well as arguments that bottom out in a supposed value humanity has. At the same time, he defends a position based on the notion that self- and other-respecting agents would, under the right circumstances, accept the principle of self-improvement and would leave it up to each to be the person to whom this duty is owed.

#SelfImprovementSept - Hobby: At one time in my life, before laundry piles became mountains peaks to scale and the kitchen became its own definition of a 24-hour diner with a personal live-in cook, I spent every Saturday morning driving around in my Dad‘s beat up Subaru with music blasting and my trusty Canon camera in the passenger seat. I never left home without that camera, a 70-200mm zoom lens and film. Gosh, I miss those days!📷🎞❤️

Crazeedi That was me too one time, but my camera was a Pentax with the same lens, along with a couple others. My dad got me hooked, he had a canon 5y

It‘s been a while since I‘ve participated in one of these challenges, but this one intrigued me! I‘m behind on my various reading challenges, so I decided to gather a stack of books that will help me complete them before the end of the year. These will keep me busy from now until December! #readinggoals #SelfImprovementSept

OriginalCyn620 I‘m impressed that you‘re thinking through to the end of the year! I can only think a month ahead when planning what to read! 👌🏻😊 5y
PurpleyPumpkin @OriginalCyn620 That‘s usually me too! I only decided to plan because I‘m so far behind in my reading. We‘ll see how this goes.😜 5y

#selfimprovementsept @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620 At the start of this month these are the books I‘m currently reading. One of My #readinggoals is to finish all of these (some of which I‘m struggling to pick up again) by October. My attention tends to stray easily which is why I have so many books on the go. Here‘s to buckling down and finishing what I‘ve started.

MoonWitch94 Beautiful Disaster was a book I HATED, but I loved Travis. I am so glad that the author created a whole series around him & his brothers. 5y
OriginalCyn620 You can do it! 👍🏻 5y
StayCurious @MoonWitch94 I‘m really trying to get through it but it‘s very dramatic. I do like Travis though and want to see what happens. 5y

MoonWitch94 @StayCurious Stick it out. Or give up & try the next book, which is Beautiful Disaster from Travis‘s POV. That one I liked way better & made more sense. Also, his brothers books are better & I think more realistic, too. (edited) 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 🙌🏻📚❤️ 5y
CoffeeLitNFit @StayCurious I loved the Beautiful series! As noted above the one from Travis‘s POV was really good. 5y
CoffeeLitNFit @StayCurious have you read Easy by Tamara Webber? That one is good too! 5y
StayCurious @CoffeeLitNFit no I‘ll give it a try - thanks for the rec! 5y

This I am definitely going for #SelfImprovementSept
Pictured above are the 8 books I plan to read for sure. My main reading goal is to finish some of the physical books I own, including a couple ARC‘s! I am planning an ARC #giveaway soon!
First up is Kill the Queen on audio and Damaged Goods by Talia Hibbert.
