Charlie Savage
Charlie Savage | Roddy Doyle
6 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
A terrifically moving and refreshing portrait of Charlie Savage, a man facing the looming spectre of his mortality and hanging on to his life for dear love (of family). Classic Roddy Doyle: funny, tender, true. Charlie is a middle-aged Dubliner on the cusp of 60 and with a long-lasting marriage to his dear wife. He's got grown children, and now beloved grandchildren, and one daughter who is determined to drag him into the 21st century, via social media, and other projects. Also vying for Charlie's attention is his recently widowed drinking buddy who undergoes a surprising change of heart and, thanks to Facebook, off they go to meet a woman from their pasts. In a series of weekly pieces in the Irish Independent newspaper during 2017 Charlie spoke to readers of his hopes and fears and anxieties. This book collects those pieces in one volume for the first time. As always, Doyle writes with enormous wisdom, great humanity and with a laugh in almost every paragraph. This novella is Roddy Doyle's love letter to life itself.

Originally serialized over a year in the Irish Independent this is a portrait of Charlie Savage as he deals with aging, a rapidly changing world, and the family he loves more than anything who want want what they think is best for him (even when all he wants is a pint while watching Match of the Day). I look forward to every new book by Roddy Doyle and loved Charlie- his humor and his gigantic heart. #mrbook1inamillion #litsypartyofone #24b4monday

It's just as well all the great stories are about young people, with young bladders...

I read this between Jun 6-8 and gave it 4 ⭐️ on Good Reads. My biggest problem was trying not to race through it as it was an enjoyable read about a middle aged Dubliner trying to navigate through a rapidly changing world. The only reason why it wasn‘t 5 stars was because it was somewhat repetitive but I think that‘s due to it being serialized in a newspaper first.
