On the first page when we meet our protagonist, Valerie, she‘s spending her 18th birthday at he with her mom, waiting to be picked by her top choice gang.
The gritty alternative San Francisco was very intriguing to me and creatively executed by the author. It didn‘t take much effort to see the world through Valerie‘s eyes, and that‘s all due to the masterful storytelling. I love a good balance of detail to plot, and this book was balanced well.
