4⭐️ I could have enjoyed this book more if I was not too distracted by things going on in my life in Dec. I loved how Callie/Cal narrated the whole family history, and how she discovered and dealt with her being hermaphrodite. Her/his voice is clear, moving, and at times humourous. I‘m now curious about how Cal lives his adult life 💕 Sorry for being such a slow buddy-reader @Cinfhen @emilyhaldi 😑

Cinfhen Great review 😁Glad this book was a pick for you 3w

I found this book hard to rate...(you're not the only one, Cindy!) It started off strong and I loved reading about the quirky Stephanides family's Greek origins. However, it slowed down about halfway and had me wondering when the heck I was going to get to Callie's big reveal. Once I did, the conclusion definitely felt rushed. Good, not great... I really wanted it to be better!!
Thanks to #sexybuddyread for pushing me to finally read this one!!

emilyhaldi @Cinfhen for once, I feel like we are totally aligned on a book! 😂 I agree with everything you said in your review - the second half of this book was totally disconnected from the first?!! Odd, but a story that I think will probably stick with me for a while 🙃 4w

The last 200 pages didn‘t match the first 300 pages and ultimately this isn‘t the book I was hoping for.
I also feel this book is dated. Had this book been published in 2019, I don‘t think it would have received the same accolades and awards. Happy to have read as it‘s been on my shelf for years. Thanks @emilyhaldi @sisilia for the #SexyBuddyRead

More #MehThanYeah. After further consideration back to 3 stars 😉

Centique Fair enough. I loved it but thought it was a bit dated too - and the first section was my favourite as well. 👍 1mo
emilyhaldi 3 stars sounds fair 🙃 I agree with you that it's definitely a bit dated. The Greek characters are fun and different for now but I'm yet to hit the sad part... I am happy to finally be reading this book after so many years of wondering what all the fuss is about!! Thanks for the motivation 🤗 1mo

I‘m liking how my new bookmark coordinates with my current buddy read. This book is starting to get a bit more “serious” but it still has PLENTY of zingy one liners. Is this book really Pulitzer Prize worthy, though?? Im not sure yet 🤨 I‘m on page 307 @emilyhaldi @sisilia / it‘s finally becoming more of Cal‘s story then Desdemona‘s.

Cinfhen I‘m happy to FINALLY be reading this book/ it‘s been on my shelf forever @Crazeedi @emilyhaldi @BkClubCare @Rissreads @JanuarieTimewalker13 And I‘m curious to see how this book develops. I do see it‘s holding power, although I feel like some of the writing is dated and some of the author‘s ideas might be more criticized if this book was published in 2019 1mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 I was wondering about that!! I think I read it in 2007. From what I remember, it did a good job of helping empathize with someone going through gender dysphoria, at least it did for me. Although their situation was slightly different but I don‘t want to spoil anything and I may not be remembering clearly. 1mo

Guess what? I liked it! I really liked itl It took some persistence, but ultimately I‘m glad I didn‘t bail on this one. I still stand by the belief this book had some lengthy, verbose description at times, but I get how ultimately, a lot of the description was necessary in understanding how the rest of the story was to unfold. This is one of those stories with heart that spans generations with just a splash of tongue in cheek humor. Stick with it.

People were falling in love, getting married, going to drug rehab, learning how to ice skate, getting bifocals, studying for exams, trying on clothes, getting their hair cut, and getting born. And in some of those houses people were getting old and sick and were dying, leaving others to grieve. It was happening all the time, unnoticed, and it was the thing that really mattered.

Eugenides spends a lot of time laying the groundwork in this Pulitzer Prize winner. The first half of the audiobook, which is over ten hours, isn‘t all that compelling, but it is necessary to fully understand this family saga that covers 3 generations of a closely knit Greek-American family. The second half is much more engaging. The narrator is above average. Overall rating: 4.30 stars.

One of the best first lines ever! Eugenides captures the complexities of so many social issues, including the personal effects of the #Detroit67 riot. It's worth examining whether naming it Rebellion or Uprising is more useful in understanding its causes. "I was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless Detroit day in January of 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan, in August of 1974."
