Wastuskee, Iowa is gearing up for its best Fourth of July ever, a weeklong gala of events. Kicking-off the festivities: a savagely butchered coed. It's business as usual for lead investigators, Detective Donald Codwell and his partner Detective Edith Hann. This is their third victim and their only leads so far are red ribbons and the twisted calling card of the words "TRAITOR OF THE HEART" smeared in blood across the ceiling. With victims piling up, Hann and Codwell's worst fears become all too real with the arrival of a top-notch FBI criminal profiler. He brings to the table the portrait of a sadistic serial killer who flaunts his high-profile crimes with chilling arrogance. Overwhelmed by such a grizzly case, what's more intimidating for Hann is the big shot profiler's identity. Special Agent Kevin Ivory walked out of her life twenty-two years ago, and he is the last person she ever expected to see again. In order to find a killer before he strikes again, the two professionals must not let a territorial pissing match-or long-simmering sexual tension-get in the way. The case becomes a little too personal, however, when the killer takes Hann's eighteen-year-old daughter. Racing against time to locate Hann's daughter, an entire department is thrown into complete disarray after their only eyewitness-a surly sixteen-year-old runaway-claims the man he saw is a cop. It's a laughable assertion...or is it? Nobody knows because the kid isn't cooperating. Found dead in his cell, the team must face the ugly truth. The cunning predator they all seek could actually be one of them...
