My municipal library has and offers a lot of great stuff but large parts of their book collection are really languishing, with old, beat-up books. My son and I combed vainly though two sections today, and it‘s was one yellowed book from 1940-1980 after another. Depressing.

TimSpalding @LibrarianRyan Yeah. When most of your shelves aren't full, as here, the problem isn't weeding. A portion of older books is okay. Having almost nothing but old books is a sign of not acquiring books. But that's okay, they have a machine that extrudes plastic shit. 5y
LibrarianRyan @TimSpalding uggghhh. My last library we weeded over 10,000 books and it allowed the newer stuff to shine. People kept asking where the money came from. No new money, still tiny collection budget, but easier. As for 3D printers, I like them and they are easy to get grants for. It‘s hard to get grants for your collection. Every few years my state gives out Back to Books grants. Super popular, but when fed cuts library funding, no grants. SUCKS 5y
baes I remember a library truck (that we had visit our elementary school) was like this. No one wanted to check anything out. Our local library has a good mix, but still never has what I‘m looking for if I‘m browsing. I wonder if this is because of libraries sharing books? It is almost guaranteed that anything newer has a waitlist. I almost always get a book through the state system, borrow ebook, or end up buying. 5y
