The Baby-Sitters Club #1: Kristy's Great Idea
The Baby-Sitters Club #1: Kristy's Great Idea | Ann M. Martin
69 posts | 142 read | 8 to read
The hit series returns to charm and inspire another generation of baby-sitters! The first three classic BSC books are back, along with a brand-new prequel, The Summer Before. It all began with a great idea ... and the inspiring original story of the Baby-sitters Club is back! Kristy Thomas's brilliant business plan gets off to a great start with the help of Claudia Kishi (vice-president), Mary Anne Spier (secretary), and Stacey McGill (treasurer).

I love that the audiobooks are available now of these 😍

ShyBookOwl I'm super curious to see if they hold up. I loved them as a kid, but I don't remember enough to say why. I still like the idea of young girls being entrepreneurial! 3mo

Hello #bfcr2 buddies! I finished my 5th audiobook yesterday, but am kind of burnt out on them now. Instead I have been catching up on podcasts these last two days.

Any excellent audiobooks to recommend?

Also I have been seeing a lot of purple flowers this week and now really want some for my yard.

BookwormAHN Those are lovely 💙 4mo
Stacy_31 So pretty!! 4mo
wanderinglynn I enjoyed Ella Enchanted. It‘s not too long (which is why I prefer children‘s books for audiobooks) and a nice reimagining of Cinderella. 4mo

Bookwormjillk @wanderinglynn good idea. I bet the kids would like it too! 4mo
Megabooks I‘ve read over 300 easily in the last few years. Do you like fiction or nonfiction? Adult or YA? I mainly read nonfiction (a lot of types), Contemporary fiction, and literary fiction. 4mo
Bookwormjillk @Megabooks anything really, but nothing too deep or with too many characters for audio. 4mo
Megabooks Little Fires Everywhere, The Quintland Sisters, Good As Gone, Born A Crime, We Are Never Meeting in Real Life, anything by Elinor Lipman, All the Missing Girls 4mo
Megabooks An Abundance of Katherines, anything by David Sedaris, Less, Bad Feminist 4mo
Bookwormjillk @Megabooks thanks so much for this list! This is amazing! I haven‘t listened to any of them except David Sedaris. 4mo
Megabooks @Bookwormjillk I hope you find something you enjoy!! 4mo

I was way too obsessed with these as a preteen! On a whim, I decided to give it a reread and it‘s still so perfectly cheesy and awesome 😍

Easter goodies for my nieces! 🐇🐣 I love seeing the old covers on this scholastic set...just like I remember.
So glad they love reading, and one may be Mo Willems biggest fan! 😉

Going through my old books! I absolutely loved the Babysitter's Club as a kid! Claudia was my favorite! Looking forward to the Netflix revamp! #90'sgirl

bookishkris Netflix is taking on the BSC? Now THAT‘S a reason to give in and get Netflix. 7mo
shellleigh33 When is this suppose to air? 7mo
flying_monkeys My daughter and I were just talking about these yesterday. She told me her fave character was Claudia too. I said I must be getting old because I can‘t remember my fave (it‘s been about 30 years since I read them 🥴 and only about 10 yrs since she read them). I‘m still glad I kept my collection and she got to read the same ones I did. 7mo

This was a lot of fun! I literally remembered exact lines from the stories, even though it‘s been about 25 years since I read them. Yes, it‘s fairly simple middle grade, but they explore some serious topics in ways that I think would be helpful for young kids. Looking forward to continuing the series soon!
BOOK 1: 4/5 ⭐️
BOOK 2: 3/5 ⭐️
BOOK 3: 3/5 ⭐️

MelissaSue81 I only reread the first one and was so disappointed. I devoured that series as a kid but thought it was total junk as an adult. 😕 8mo
alisonrose @MelissaSue81 Well, it is middle grade, and outdated middle grade at that. Not something you go into expecting brilliance. As I said, I thought it was fun to revisit. If you didn‘t, that‘s fine, but calling something that someone just said they liked “junk” is unnecessary. 8mo

FUCK YEAH starting my BSC reread. Got a library card just for this purpose, LOL. One of my fave Booktubers, Kerryn at RatherBeReading, started rereading it last year, I thought it was a brilliant idea. I ADORED it as a girl, looking forward to visiting the girls & Stonybrook again! I know they‘re gonna be pretty simple, but it‘ll still be fun. Gonna blow through first 3 today! (They‘re 150 to 170 pages & font is big, not exactly a Herculean task)

An entertaining throwback read✨

I reread this one in nearly no time at all the other day just before listening to the corresponding episode of SSR Podcast (so fun!). I read every BSC book over and over when I was a kid and I could read them all again. ✨THIS REREAD WAS A DELIGHT!!✨ I remembered nearly all of the details on this one from Claudia‘s mean sister Janine to Mary Anne‘s strict dad to why Stacy is on a “diet.” BSC Forever!!

(I truly dislike these newer covers!)

Bklover I agree completely on the covers! 10mo
alisonrose I LOVED this series as a kid, and a booktuber I watch has been doing a reread of them for a while and it really makes me want to do the same! But I agree, I miss the original covers! 10mo

Sometimes you need to dive back into your childhood. I just started listening to the babysitters club club podcast and it is so funny. I‘m going to reread the books along with them. #nostalgia #childhood #originalcover https://headgum.com/the-baby-sitters-club-club

Blaire @MelissaSue81 it is! I‘ve only listened to the first episode...but they dig in and discuss the deeper themes they see “the patriarchy” “capitalism vs Marxism” and should it be the Baby-sitters‘ club with an apostrophe? 😂😂😂 1y

Thank you @MatchlessMarie for your awesome #1kgiveaway!!

My biggest literary confession is that when I feel lonely or overwhelmed, I will sometimes go back and read a BSC book. I moved around a lot as a kid, & I think those girls were like friends that I always had with me. It‘s almost like comfort food but for my brain! 😂😂

Linsy I love that! Harry Potter and Ella Enchanted are my comfort reads. 💕 2y
keys_on_fire @Linsy I‘ve read the Harry Potter books, but not Ella Enchanted. Will be adding that to my stack! 2y
MelissaSue81 See, I loved and devoured all the BSC books as a kid but when I went back to read them as an adult, I was unimpressed. But my oldest daughter read a bunch of them . 2y

keys_on_fire @MelissaSue81 I can totally understand that! The voices have changed for me, and I roll my eyes sometimes but I guess it‘s the nostalgia lol!! 2y

#MarchIntoOz Day 28: When your child can enjoy an #AloneWithYou moment with a book, then you must have done something right. My girl and I loved this graphic novel adaptation of The Baby-Sitters Club which I personally didn‘t even read when I was a tweener (I was an SVH kind of girl back then). But this one was a quick and enjoyable read. Telgemeier is a master at graphic novels for younger readers.

Longest series: probably Baby-Sitters Club when I was a kid
Series I gave up on: Stephanie Plum - once Evanovich said Stephanie wasn't going to evolve any further or choose between Joe and Ranger, I just couldn't convince myself they were worth my time
Shelve or Pass: shelve; I'm a bit of a pack rat
Book Club: Not right now - I miss my old YA book club, but when I switched jobs, my schedule interferes with the meeting time.

Sharpeipup Stephanie will never choose between Morelli & Ranger? 2y
Bkwrm7 That's what Evanovich said in an interview years ago. I haven't read any of the series since the mid-teens or so, so it's totally possible she changed her mind later on! 2y

Happy #TuesdayTidbits 😊
1. Hands down Babysitters Club (but I also loved Sweet Valley High and Fear Street)
2. Ready Player One (it wasn't published in 2017, but that's when I read it)
3. Dolores Umbridge. It's not even a competition.
4. Outlander (please don't hate--I tried really hard to both read the books AND watch the series and I just can't, no matter how adorable Jamie Fraser is or how much I like historical fiction)
5. @hermyknee 😘

I was a little bummed that the library didn't have the cover from when I was a kid (back when it was a new release 😅). I haven't read this book since I was 11 but it all came back within the first 2 pages. It was so much fun reading this again. I'm currently trying to talk my daughter into reading it. These kids today don't know what they're missing! #Throwbackreadathon
@monalyisha @Clwojick

monalyisha This is in my stack, too! Except I‘m sort of cheating because they remade them into graphic novels, so I‘m reading one of those instead. Raina Telgemeir does the artwork; kids today will check-out ANYTHING she‘s associated with. I‘m looking at it as professional development. 😉🙌🏻😅 #librarylife 2y
Clwojick @monalyisha WHAT!? Graphic Novels! How did I now know this? 2y
monalyisha @Clwojick Haha. Probably because you don‘t work with 10-year-olds every day. (Don‘t worry; I‘m sure there are benefits to a kid-free workplace. Like: it doesn‘t always smell weirdly like Fritos). 2y

I really enjoyed this update on a childhood favorite. When I was younger I didn‘t care for the Baby Sitters Club books. I did however love the Baby Sitters Club Mysteries. So it was refreshing to see Telgemeier‘s telling. It stays true to the originals, and still feels 80‘s, but it also feels modern and appropriate for today's youth. Even if most of them don‘t babysit.

I'm waiting on the last few regular books and mysteries. 2y

On a whim I typed the series title into Stictcher and discovered a great podcast of two best (guy) friends rereading all the books and discussing them!!

My mom just bought this stack of BSC books for me. She found them in a used store. They were my favorites as a kid. I'm so excited!

Reviewsbylola I may start collecting these for when my kids are old enough. 😂 #bsc4ever 3y

All right, confession time. I'm trying to read my way through one of my favorite series as a kid. I follow The Babysitters Club Club podcast, and it's hilarious! These books are also a good palate cleanser since I can read them in one sitting. I'm having a hard time getting a hold of some of the books to keep reading in order, which is kind of a bummer. Anyone have any suggestions?

Kshakal I loved these books as a kid and owned most of them but they got sold at thrift sales over the years which now makes me sad! 3y
Moosknmouse Have you checked thriftbooks.com? 3y
Little_Reader @Moosknmouse Yeah, it's very hit and miss, though. Welcome to Litsy, by the way! 3y
