I‘ve been so MIA from Litsy and also haven‘t had much time to read, but that‘s because we are on our honeymoon! We finished the first part of our adventure with hiking, cliff jumping and abseiling down waterfalls in Cape Town. Now, off to the Winelands for wine tasting! Everything is so beautiful here. But I sure am so looking forward to coming home to Litsy mail. I‘ve been picking up small things for the #LitsyLove crew and can‘t wait to share!♥️

Why would George Eliot, Marian Evan's pen name, at 60 marry a man 20 years her junior shortly after the death of the man she loved for 26 years?

That is the question the author tries to answer in this novel pulling from biographies, letters, and other material.

Overall I really enjoyed it. I found the middle to feel less like fiction trying to fit all the books she was writing in and all the details. Four stars ****

Looking back at those hours, she wondered if God, or nature, or whoever it was, granted humans a kind of mercy at terrible times by dulling their minds with exhaustion and blunting their perceptions.

She marveled at the infinite variety of the English language, words in general, the rhythms of the English sentence, the sentences twisting and turning themselves in a symphonic complexity...

Words alone were abstractions, but when they were joined and linked, they could thrill and take possession of the soul. Words were the weapons and playthings of the mind.

Smith's book is a well researched and sensitively imagined fictional biography of Marian Evans' (aka George Eliot) life, from childhood to death. This is much more about her life and loves than her writing career But her life inspired her works! Engrossing!

It's called "The Honeymoon," but it's actually Marian Evans--aka George Eliot--looking back upon her life while on her Venetian honeymoon to John Walker Cross, her husband who is 20 years younger than herself. It's fascinating and is inspiring me to try Middlemarch again this summer.

George Eliot's later years, can't wait to read it
