This was a chilling read. Du Maurier weaves a masterful tale of suspense, drama and intrigue with a bit of romance for good measure. The back drop of the moors and granite tors make it so very atmospheric.

This is the story of young Mary Yellan , whose mother dies. Mary heads off to Jamaica Inn to live on the moors with her aunt and uncle. The moors are desolate and weather beaten. A thriller of pure tension, dark and violent. I loved it.

1. To me, it‘s historical fiction if the bulk of the action takes place at least fifty years before the book was written. In any case, I prefer historical fiction that takes place before I was born.
2. I don‘t remember how much of the tagged book takes place in autumn, but it definitely has a dark and spooky vibe to it.

????? Another classic in the bag. There is nothing I love more than a good old fashioned gothic tale. Jamaica Inn gives you all of those things. It felt very much like a mixture of Brontë and Collins. The mystery of Collins Lady in White and Bronte‘s Jane Eyre (a personal favorite). The mysterious, dark inn, the moors, the heather the crashing sea all things I love.

For a long time I've always wanted to read something by Du Maurier, and I finally did! The atmosphere in this book is unbelievable. It almost felt like I was standing on the shores myself, while the fog is closing in more and more... The same with the characters and their relationships. Great writing. Only sometimes the plot drags a little, it would've been better to just shorten the story a tiny bit.

A strongly gothic mystery with fantastic atmospheric vibes. Set on the moors, which was PERFECT, everything is very gray & murky, even the circumstances of the happenings at Jamaica Inn. I enjoyed du Maurier's clever writing & the way she really brings her characters to life. Mary is a strong female protagonist with Austen heroine vibes. A well-written plot with high suspense. I truly wasn't sure what to expect.

Re-reading this book again, it has lost none of the author's power of imagery. I could hear the waves crashing on the rocks, feel the freezing driving rain, and almost see the mist over the moors. This was on my TBR for years! It‘s a gloomy, gothic tale of smuggling (and worse) off the coast of Cornwall in 1820. Written by Du Maurier several years before ‘Rebecca‘, I thought the suspense here was just as compelling but this one was more horror story than love story.

Read in March for #AuthorAMonth... I probably shouldn‘t compare du Maurier‘s other work to her brilliant Rebecca, but it‘s hard not to. 🤷🏻‍♀️

While not as perfect, Jamaica Inn is a moody, dark, mysterious and, at times, very exciting suspense thriller, and even though I figured it out a bit early, it was a pleasure to listen to. Now I need to watch the adaption!

There were moments of great suspense, dread, and entertainment. But there were also a LOT of repetitive descriptions of the moors, and dithering on Mary's part, and frequent dreaming of a return to life on her farm (only to end as it did). And were we supposed to cheer for the romance? Because I just couldn't.

Entertaining enough, but a skippable duMaurier, in my opinion.

This one started off really slow for me and it took me a while to get in to it, I don‘t think it helped that I‘d read My Cousin Rachel right before this and loved it. Once things started to pick up and the mystery and secrets of her uncle began to come to light, combined with the heart pounding race to the end then I really got into it. Basically, I like the last 1/3 of the book the best. #AuthorAMonth #BookSpinBingo

Is Gothic Melodrama a genre?? It should be, because this was creepy AF. I‘m amazed that this was written back in the 1930‘s as the author really nailed religious piety and dastardly deeds full on! It became a little too much & I started to lose interest but still a worthy classic. I really enjoyed the audio narration by Tony Britton. #AAM
