To the Waters and the Wild
To the Waters and the Wild: A Novel | S. C. McGrath
4 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
Shrouded in mystery, ancient Eire nurtured a people both eloquent and fierce. Scholars and warriors were honored with like reverence and women were recognized as equals to men. Within this isolated world of poetry and warfare, Keelin, a fearless chieftain's daughter, struggles to understand her fate. Gifted by the gods in the arts of healing and telepathy, and destined to become a priestess, she nonetheless rails against such a solitary and self-sacrificing life, chafing under the strict tutelage of the austere priestess, Nuala, who demands unerring scholarship and dedication.Keelin's troubles are soon overshadowed by a deadly threat to her island home: the most powerful civilization in the ancient world has turned a covetous eye toward Eire and an invasion is imminent. Rife with clan rivalries and blood feuds, Eire and its defiantly independent people seem doomed, forcing Keelin to resolve her internal strife and quickly hone her extrasensory powers-powers she has kept carefully hidden-to help defeat the invader in a battle that will irrevocably seal not only her fate, but that of her beloved country.

Mehso-so

I had a love/hate relationship with this book. It seemed to me that it couldn‘t decide what it wanted to be...love story, fantasy, historical war adventure, with a little teleportation/time-traveling thrown in for good measure.

This is the story of Keelin, a young woman who embraces her destiny to become a priestess, gifted in healing, mind manipulation and time travel. As the daughter of an Eire (ancient Ireland) chieftain, she uses her 🔽🔽

robinb abilities to aid her people as they are threatened by war.

My issues here were threefold: the war (which had a huge buildup) occurred 25 pages from the ending; there were some skips/jumps in the narrative (not pertaining to time travel) that were a bit annoying; and the ending left a cliffhanger of sorts...and I haven‘t seen any indication of this being a series.

robinb To sum it up, the writing was fine, the characters likeable enough but not sure what I just read...I feel like I‘ve been reading in limbo. 3/5⭐️

Reading in bed with this beauty. A #BookishFirst win (thanks!) billed as an historical fantasy. 😊🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️

Melissa_J This sounds really interesting. 5y
robinb @Melissa_J So far, so good! 👍 I‘m seeing it more as a YA choice since our heroine is an about-to-turn 17 yo. 😊 5y

Starting this beauty today. I won an ARC of it from BookishFirst.com last week and I cannot find any reviews on it on Goodreads or here, good or bad! So I'm going into this one with a completely open mind which is really nice! This one grabbed my attention from the exceprt I'd read so I'm hoping it continues to keep it. If anything, the cover is gorgeous!
