3 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
In the dying days of September 1938 the murderer of a Jewish shopkeeper is hanged in Birmingham. After witnessing the execution, Inspector James Given, who brought the killer to justice, is surprised to find he has been taken off the investigation into attacks on Jews to pursue a very different case. Two people have been found dead in the grounds of a Warwickshire house: it seems clear that Lady Isabel Barleigh has shot her disabled son on the eve of his wedding then turned the weapon on herself. An hour later his fiancee, distraught with grief, committed suicide. The case has been all but closed; Given doesn't believe this version of events and, with the local policeman, Constable Sawyer, begins to dig further into the past of the Barleigh family. Meanwhile, Given's own past - his very nature, hidden from all - begins to catch up with him A complex mystery about identity, deceit, and past crimes. Inspired by a true story."

Mehso-so

1st in a series and set around Kenilworth & Royal Leamington Spa (Pump Room in Photo) I enjoyed the book more because I had spent time with work in both areas rather than the story itself. Inspired by a true story of which I had seen a TV prog that also used the same theme I had an idea of the ending making this a so-so. An easy clue in the latter stages was a bit of a spoiler. The storyline was interesting, descriptive, enjoyable and believable.

Pickpick

I very much enjoyed this entertaining country house murder mystery. There is a plot within a plot - both are cleverly written and combine to make an interesting and intriguing read. The historical aspect is well researched and I loved trying to work out ‘whodunnit‘. There are so many twists and turns it was difficult to know quite what was going on.
Quite the page turner!
