I enjoyed this book, but not quite as much as I enjoyed the first in the series. It's still a great pick for fans of fantasy. It's also a fascinating exploration of fear, especially the anxiety parents experience over their children's safety. #fantasy #talkinganimal #parallelworlds #multipleworlds #innervoice #steampunk

Okay so I just finished His Dark Materials and I might be obsessed. What an adventure! The plot, the characters, the world building were all fantastic. I‘m gonna keep reading everything set in this universe.

Liatrek This is on my list to read this year 😊 I‘m glad to hear you liked it. (edited) 2w
Moray_Reads I read them when they were first published but I didn't realise just how good they were until I reread them as an adult 2w
EchoLogical @Liatrek I really did. I hope you enjoy it just as much. 2w
EchoLogical @Moray_Reads I guess it‘s a good thing that it took me so long to read them. 😃 (edited) 2w

There is a LOT going on here. A huge cast of characters and a lot of different plot threads. To be honest I found it a bit difficult to follow, it might have been easier to keep up with in print. Still, it's a gripping read. The humanist/anti-religion element is far stronger and clearer than in the first 2 books. Exciting, fast paced and really moving in parts.

An exciting and bittersweet conclusion to the trilogy. Pullman laid out some interesting concepts. I found that this volume was more YA than the previous two with a few things that didn‘t quite flow very well, but I still enjoyed it. Here‘s to the Republic of Heaven versus the Kingdom of Heaven!

Not sure how I ended up bingeing on the His Dark Materials audiobooks but my advent project is halfway done and they‘re really well done (although Pullman himself as the narrator has a bit of a slow grandfatherly Märchenonkel vibe). I‘m nearly at the end now and NOT READY! After this, I‘ll need something light and fluffy ...

I'm combining my #BookReport and #WeeklyForecast:

This week I finished Laudato Si as planned and made progress on both Lab Girl and The Amber Spyglass. Even though #NFNov is ending, I will proceed as planned with Priestdaddy after I (hopefully) finish both Lab Girl and The Amber Spyglass this coming week! 😊

@Cinfhen

Cinfhen I wish every month was #NF themed!!!! I find as I get older fiction novels don‘t satisfy the way NF does (at least for me) 2mo
Caterina @Cinfhen I adore most genres, particularly gorgeous literary fiction - but since I'm reading so much NF for my Master's right now, I find that I mostly only want to read memoirs and no other NF on top of my assigned books! I need that fiction break 😂🙈 2mo

I enjoyed this series. I particularly liked that it didn‘t end with a happy ending that tied everything up to give a warm fuzzy as you closed the book. Many characters made real sacrifices, often with unhappy consequences. While it‘s a fantasy series, the ending felt true to the characters and ‘real‘ for the story to me. Clearly Hank the Book Sniffer gave up and went to sleep without me. 🤣📚💕

Karisa Loved that series! The movie did not capture the heart of it somehow. 3mo
Ericalambbrown @Karisa the first episode of the new series was promising. I hope it continues well. 3mo

Got an #audiowalk in to get groceries. 💕 Love living somewhere that makes it so easy to walk to so many places!

I have to say, I'm on book 3 of this trilogy and can see why Christian parents (and potentially Jewish or Muslim parents) would be concerned about their children reading these books. Censorship is not the right option though! If my non-existent child wanted to read these books, I would just read the books with them and talk about them!

Finished the third book in Phillip Pullman His Dark Materials Trilogy. The best of the lot by far, and very emotional towards the end of the book. Really enjoyed this whole series, but this book definitely ended it on a high. I do recommend these books to others. Now I need to get to The Book of Dust Series for some more Lyra!

Higgledy-piggledy. One of those words I've heard on occasion, but seldom seen in print or had a reason to write myself. Well, The Amber Spyglass and The Little Paris Bookshop both contain higgledy-piggledy, and I just happened to read these two books back-to-back! The coincidence made me chuckle! 4 stars I‘m giving it 4 stars because once the book started giving me more of a story line and focusing on fantasy mixed with a little science and less anti-God and religion I was able to enjoy it more so book 1 was my favorite book two was eh not really and book three sort of redeemed itself but it took about 350 pages to do so . 3 books down for my series binge for reading rivalry challenge.

I'm in Oxford on a beautiful autumn day and have just discovered the Botanic Gardens bench made famous by Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. I'm not going to lie, there's a year in my eye. I forgot how heartbreaking this book is! I don‘t think I could ever quite appreciate this as a child. There are so many dark and complex ideas in this story that even as a adult I‘m a little drained (in a good way). The decisions that Will and Lyra have to make throughout are devastatingly difficult and their final choice leaves me streaming with tears. I could read this a million times and never get bored.

His Dark Materials is undoubtedly a fantasy adventure series but, most importantly, it is a cogent philosophical argument. Although The Amber Spyglass has the perfunctory epic last battle, dastardly villains, and bittersweet romance, what I will carry away is its themes: humanity's place in the universe, the role of art, religion, and science. Loved these books, loved its worlds. Long live the Republic of Heaven.

Although there were parts that dragged (mostly when Lyra wasn't involved), the final book of His Dark Materials does an excellent job of concluding Pullman's epic narrative. While it was a big time commitment, I'm glad I read the trilogy as one long book this time around. I'm very excited for the next Book Of Dust, which is to be set a decade after The Amber Spyglass, to learn what comes next for Lyra Belacqua. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
