@Clwojick @StayCurious #MerryReaders #WinterGames Enjoyed this quite a bit ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5. A dark blood-magic universe driven by power greed and death all wrapped up in an Ivy League college setting. Wished some of the action was spread out a little more (last third was the most interesting). This was a #TBRRead from October when I jealously saw everyone reading it! Yay Winter Games points!

December TBR! In December, my goals are to read all the things, and also to find a few more 5⭐️ reads before the end of 2019. I've already finished 3 of these (The Test, All Systems Red, Ninth House) and started several of the others. I think I'm on track to finish 2019 strong!

So, the first 225 pages of this book could be reduced to like 50 pages. It was a struggle for me to get through those pages. Granted, it was setting the scene and building the world, but it felt disjointed and dragged. However, I will definitely pick up any other books in the series, because the second half redeemed the entire book.

This book is well written. I found parts of it interesting. The reason I gave it 3 stars is because I found extremely intricate. I had to keep notes to remember characters, and had to refer to my notes often. There were many terms that were foreign to me that were eventually explained, much later in the story. I found myself having to read chapters more than once to try to understand what was going on. I finished it, but struggled to do so.

I‘m torn on this one. I have loved all her other work. Really want to love it but. Eh.

Nutmegnc @Slajaunie I finished it and I think the last of it was the best (not great but the best of a bad read) but still I was like, wait, what?? When did that happen? And then, huh? (edited) 7d

Bailing at 9:56:36/61%. Some big authors have some ‘splainin‘ to do for lauding this!

Settings What was wrong? I'm considering reading it but I'm suspicious. 1w
JoyBlue @Settings I read a laundry list of trigger warnings in several Goodreads reviews, but still dug in to the book. I've been reading a lot of fantasy lately, so I really hoped I'd be able to get past the warnings. There was just too much sexual violence (any is too much, but this is extreme)—I can't get past that. I think it could have been a pretty (even really?) good story without that. 1w
Settings @JoyBlue Thank you for the explanation. That doesn't sound like I would like it either. 1w

This suspenseful, gritty supernatural thriller actually lived up to the hype. Galaxy Stern, aka Alex, gets a nearly miraculous chance at redemption after being found unconscious and high on fentanyl at the scene of a bloody murder in LA. She has been recruited by a secret society at Yale, a select team who make sure the official houses don't overstep the bounds of their supernatural entitlement. A fascinating start--looking forward to more!

What a ride! A slow start, but worth it. I certainly haven't experienced anything that Alex goes through, but I found her feelings of not belonging and scrappy will to survive very relatable. Looking forward to the next book! In the meantime, if anyone has another Bardugo recommendation, let me know!

While I may own many of Leigh‘s books, this is the first I have actually read, and I quite enjoyed it. I love the mix of magic, the arcane, Yale secret societies, and action.adventure. It just all worked together quite nice. I didn‘t think the end was a super big surprise, but it was not fully expected either which was nice.

This was right in my wheelhouse of things I love, and I eagerly await book 2. If only the wait wasn‘t so long.

Today is my first day at a new job. I get a 45 minute mandatory lunch break. I don't typically eat lunch but I will take 45 minutes in the middle of a work day to read a book! My last job was so demanding that I never had time for lunch (or bathroom breaks, for that matter), so this is awesome.

I waited a month to write this. I couldn‘t decide if I so-so liked it or downright hated it. Looks like I‘m landing in between.

The concept of a haunted Yale is a go for launch. 🚀 The story set within is more Houston we have a problem. I was disappointed with where we left Darlington, uninvested in our surprise villain and, although she has a cool name, I felt like Alex was just a messy mess. Very disappointed. I normally love Bardugo.

Great, fun, funky read. In this book Leigh Bardugo is a grand mistress of the paranormal.

Alex (Galaxy) Storm has been brought to Yale to become a member of Leithe, a group that monitors the Secret Societies And they do have secrets! You‘ll enjoy the details. I highly recommend this novel. It would be great for the holiday weekend.

This was such a good book! I couldn't put it down. This is the story of Alex Stern, a freshman at Yale. She is a high school dropout from LA, but recruited to be in the Ninth House. But why her? Ninth house monitors the 8 secret societes. They are more than the rich and powerful, they wield magic. Alex is overwhelmed trying to keep up with her studies and her ninth house responsibilities.
And then things really get busy!

This one is tricky to review. There‘s no doubt that Leigh Bardugo can write AND tell a good story. But. This story has so many side plots and extra details that didn‘t need to be there. And all of that bogged down the story and all the fantastical magical elements lost some of their appeal. I also think it should be a single book instead of the first in a series. I do love that the main character is a badass female!

jillrhudy I've read so many raves but honestly, my brain can't take any more overwhelming morasses of side plots right now. 1w

The Santa Clause Parade is on TV tomorrow. We always have hot chocolate and candy canes. But the youngest has a serious mint aversion. I spent a horrible amount of time trying to find some that were not mint. When I finally found some, I also found a book on sale. No regrets.

Clare-Dragonfly I‘m surprised you had a hard time! I see so many that are not mint! Lots of weird flavors. Two years ago when I was pregnant there was something at work where people brought in a dizzying array of different candy canes to share with everyone… 😋 3w
