Lies in White Dresses
Lies in White Dresses: A Novel | Sofia Grant
7 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
In the 1940s and 50s, women who needed a fast divorce went to Nevada to live on a ranch with other women in the same boat. This historical novel was inspired by the true stories of those who took the Reno cure. Francie Meeker and Vi Carothers were sold a bill of goods: find a man, marry him in a white wedding gown, and live happily ever after. These best friends never expected to be on the train to Reno, those lies in white dresses shattered, their marriages over. On board the train they meet June Samples, who is fleeing an abusive husband with her daughter, and take the vulnerable young mother under their wing. The three decide to wait out the required six weeks together, and then they can toss their wedding bands into the Truckee River and start new lives as divorcees. But as they settle in at the ranch, one shocking moment will change their lives forever. As it brings their deceptions and fears into focus, it will also demand a reckoning with the past, and the choices that a person in love can be driven to make.

I read this book a few years ago & it #InvolvesDivorce
Set in 1952, 3 women go to Nevada to take the “Reno Cure” where women would go live in Reno for 6 weeks in order to establish residency & get an uncontested divorce.

I had a hard time whittling this year's best reads down to twelve. These are all the amazing runners up, in no order whatsoever, that almost made the cut.

This is a story about hope, redemption, female friendships, motherhood, marriage, and strength. I was fascinated to learn about 'the Reno Cure" as I'd never heard about that little slice of history. The story did devolve into farce for a few chapters but overall it was quite enjoyable.

Two wealthy, older society matrons travel together to Reno to live for 6 weeks so they can be granted divorces. Along the way, they adopt a younger woman and her small daughter going for the same reason. This is a book about friendship, love, rebuilding, and reinvention. It‘s engaging and has a couple of unexpected surprises along the way. Full review at https://booknaround.blogspot.com/2019/10/review-lies-in-white-dresses-by-sofia.h...

#SoaringScores #catchup
What I liked best was learning about “The Reno Cure” where women would go live in Reno, Nevada for 6 weeks in order to establish residency & get an uncontested divorce. Set in 1952, 3 women follow #TheCallOfDestiny (one more reluctantly than the others) to new lives in a time when it wasn‘t easy to take a different path than the happily ever after they expected. Paired with Chop Suey for my book tour review link to post👇🏻

I just finished a book that took me forever and that I didn‘t much like so I‘m going to choose a lighter looking one to open next. Fingers crossed I enjoy it loads more than the last one!

A current read for a book tour review this week with today‘s finished soup-my lunch & #soupersundays blog post. This is (Not) Chicken Enchilada Soup from Eating Well, subbing in jackfruit for the chicken to make it meat free. It‘s really good, as is the book so far. I had not heard of women in the ‘40s & ‘50s taking the “Reno cure”-staying in Reno, Nevada for 6 weeks to get a fast divorce. I like historical fiction that teaches me something.🤓

Cinfhen Book sounds fascinating and your soup looks delicious 😋 5y
