Mehso-so

It‘s not what I wanted from this book, but I‘m glad I read it. I consider myself a “cafeteria Catholic” so I tend to take most things with a grain of salt.

DimeryRene I have never heard that phrase! I get called a diet catholic all the time though.

Ugh. Where to start. First of all, he implies that homosexuality is to blame for the sex abuse. He also claims that the laity bear partial responsibility. Uh, no & no. He never once mentions Pope Francis by name, despite the steps he has taken to purge corruption from the Church, but talks in length about corrupt popes in history. This is pure alt right, conservative, anti Vatican II bs.

A renewal movement is coming, just not the one he wants.

SleepyDragon First time in forever that I read with a pen in hand to write counterpoints in the margins. Some things he wrote were just not true, while others were just obviously biased. He calls for a revolution to return to the status quo, which is exactly the attitude driving people away from the Church. (edited) 5y
Susanita Ugh. What is the status quo anymore anyway? Sounds like MAGA etc. 5y
SleepyDragon @Susanita In terms of the factions within the Church, I was referring to what are called "traditionalists." They hate change, consider Church Doctrine to be set in stone, think only men should be altar servers and Mass should only be said in Latin, and that Vatican II should never have happened. They are most aligned with the Christian Right politically, and resemble Protestant Fundamentalists in many ways. So yeah, very Maga-esc. 5y

My parish bought a bunch of these and offered them to the congregation to take if interested. So I did, because, well, free book. Glad my parish bought so many copies, since proceeds are donated to charities that help victims of sexual abuse. I'm interested, since Barron states he is not speaking on behalf of the Church, and a few reviews I saw were positive. Anyone else read it? My husband doesn't want to, so I've got no one to discuss it with.

SleepyDragon Delved a little deeper, and now I am wary of this book. He's an EWTN alt right personality. Ugh. I may still read it, but if he starts in blaming homosexuals, it may be my first DNF since I was a kid. (edited) 5y
LogiKitty You had me there until I saw the comment! Let us know how it goes 😅 5y
SleepyDragon @LogiKitty I know, right? It might be destined for the recycling bin. 5y
