Shadows of the Dark Crystal #1
Shadows of the Dark Crystal #1 | J. M. Lee
29 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 22 to read
Praise for Shadows of the Dark Crystal: With deft nods to the original Dark Crystal movie and a passionate attention to detail, the author has fashioned an impressive prequel. Fans (who will instantly recognize certain elements) and newcomers alike will find themselves immersed in a new narrative, with new protagonists and dangers to face. Readers who crave otherworld fantasy such as Jaleigh Johnsons The Mark of the Dragonfly and Paul Durhams The Luck Uglies will enjoy discovering this new series. School Library Journal While young readers probably wont have seen the film, the books might lead them to it; even if they dont have that point of reference, Hensons world is richly imagined here, and it will be well worth the projected four books to explore the landscape, characters, and storylines. The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books Characters and situations are compelling, and this first of a planned four-volume series aptly sets the stage and the conflict and tugs strongly on the heartstrings, setting readers up for more great adventures Booklist The first series of original novels ever set in the world of Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal. Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal: Shadows of the Dark Crystal is set years before the events of the classic film and follows the journey of a young Gelfling woman who leaves her secluded home to uncover the truth surrounding the disappearance of her brother who has been accused of treason by the sinister Skeksis Lords. 4.5🌟
Be still my ever lovin‘ child's heart. This book took me back to my freaked out happy childhood place where the Skeskies were crazy scary looking villains, and Gelflings were the heroes to save the world. This is a prequel series to the original 80‘s Jim Hensen masterpiece the Dark Crystal. I put off reading it because I didn‘t want my childhood memories ruined. They are happily intact and I am extremely glad I have books 2, 3, and 4 on hand

hannah-leeloo My fiancé got me the shadows of the dark crystal book, I'm really looking forward to reading it 🙃❤️📚 @Jackal121 3mo

It was so good ya‘LL. I‘m not sure if I‘m prepped enough to watch the new series or not because 1/2 of the new pops are either non in this book or are barely mentioned.

More later

Hestapleton Ahem. That book hugger is GORG. Where can I get my grabby hands on one? 3mo
LibrarianRyan @Hestapleton Well it just so happens that I have a bit of a stock pile as I am getting ready to sell them. I just haven't figured out how yet. I put our some feelers for some of our Etsy people to ask questions, I have just been so bogged I have not been able to ask them yet.

As for this one, you don't want to see the front. My puppy got a hold of it and it has a hole, and half the snaps don't meet. I'm going to fix it eventually. All mine

Hestapleton @LibrarianRyan well let me know when your shop goes live cause I‘m interested! I need one of these to hide the murdery book titles I sometimes bring to work. 🙈 3mo
Sweetkokoro I binged the whole show (cuz I‘m impatient and needed to watch it all before I finished reading it haha) but the show pulls from all the books and tells the story in a different manner and mostly from Rian‘s point of view instead of Naia‘s. I was at first miffed about it (I love kylan so I was sad) but it actually really worked out, but I do plan to read the rest to see what full differences there actually is. 3mo
Sweetkokoro I feel like the show, is more loosely inspired by the books as opposed to being based on the books. There are characters who are present in both but then some who aren‘t present in either, (or possibly changed) it‘s like they can go hand in hand or they can be appreciated separately, but they both manage to tell the origins of the Crystal in the world of Thra in a compelling manner. 3mo
OneStrangeGuy I had no idea there were books! Now they are in my to read list for sure! 3mo
LibrarianRyan @OneStrangeGuy there is a few book. This one is what the new show is loosely based on. This series actually. There are currently 4 book. There is a sequel series GN called Power of the Dark Crystal that is excellent. And it has a spin off series Beneath the dark crystal. There is also a 10+ year old a Tokyopop GN that isn‘t that great. 3mo
OneStrangeGuy @LibrarianRyan thanks! I will keep an eye out for them 3mo

As the Netflix series is so good, I thought I would read this. It's a swift read. I'm almost done and this is only my second day reading it. It's quite enjoyable.

LibrarianRyan I‘m reading it tooo. But I‘m making myself finish the book before I watch the series. 3mo
Seshat @LibrarianRyan I couldn't wait! It's such a fully realized world. 3mo
Lady_Tigana_20 My library had an ebook available, so I just downloaded it. Thanks! 3mo

Mehso-so

It pains me to say this was a so-so read from me (3stars) I love the original Dark Crystal movie, but for me this book just didn‘t hold me like the movie did story wise. I felt very bored through out It. I did enjoy the characters (mostly Kylan) but overall it just left me in a state of “meh” it wasn‘t amazing but it wasn‘t terrible either. I‘ll continue the series but I‘m going into the rest with a mediocre interest.

Who‘s excited for the new Dark Crystal?

Best part of moving is ALWAYS reorganizing your bookshelves. I had to box up and leave behind about 99% of my book collection though 😭😭😭

I just couldn‘t get into this one. It‘s not my usual genre and I was honestly only reading it because I “thought” my boyfriend would be reading too, but he never even started it. I may come back to it later but for now it‘s a DNF.

I read Shadows of the Dark Crystal in January and found unputdownable. I am an avid fan of Brian Froud and The Dark Crystal so when I discovered the novel I couldn‘t resist. I found out it‘s a series with only two books out at the moment so I‘m trying to hold off reading book two because it‘s relatively newly released and who knows when the third will be out? 🤷🏼‍♀️ Have you heard of this series? #fantasy #thedarkcrystal #brianfroud #faery #fairy

TommieMarie74 I had no idea this existed. I love The Dark Crystal. I must have these! 😍 2y

An excellent debut novel and well execute considering the cult following the original film has.

I takes place before the film 🎥. And we follow Naia in the quest to find her brother who is wanted by the Skesis.

My only criticism is that the book is slow in some parts and all the action seems rushed in end. However I will be following this trilogy through!

The 2 on the right are going to be gifts for my sister. I practically squealed when I saw the Dark Crystal one. (I do try to act like an adult in public.) TDC was one of her all time favorite movies as a kid. The 2 on the left were freebies because I hit my awesome indie bookshop, hellohellobooks, for Shop Small Saturday. Today was a book shopping mega win!

If you fondly remember The Dark Crystal from your childhood, then you should give the YA and GA (Geeky Adult) story a read. I truly enjoyed this adventure.
