A Moth to a Flame
A Moth to a Flame | Stig Dagerman
3 posts | 1 read
In a working-class neighbourhood in 1940s Stockholm, a young man named Bengt falls into deep, private turmoil with the unexpected death of his mother. As he struggles to cope with her loss, his despair slowly transforms to rage when he discovers that his father had a mistress. Bengt swears revenge on behalf of his mother's memory, but he soon finds himself drawn into a fevered and forbidden affair with the very woman he set out to destroy . . . Written in a taut, restrained style, A Moth to a Flame is an intense exploration of heartache and fury, desperation and illicit passion. Set against a backdrop of the moody streets of Stockholm and the Hitchcockian shadows in the woods and waters of Sweden's remote islands, this is a psychological masterpiece by one of Sweden's greatest writers.

Our latest episode of Books On The Go is up! 🎧 Amanda and I discuss the Carol Shields Prize and this book. We loved so much about this one: the Penguin European Writers Series ✅ ; the Swedish setting ✅ and a juicy premise ✅. But we didn‘t like the book. 🙄

Mehso-so

I have loved the Penguin European Writers series but didn‘t get on with this one. It moves slowly and the narrator is an unlikeable, highly strung young man who treats women and animals terribly. That makes him interesting too and there‘s much to unpack & discuss - eg he‘s vulnerable & mentally unwell, but because it dragged on, I lost interest. I skipped pages & found I hadn‘t missed anything, they‘re still walking to the cinema or eating.

Sneaky #bookhaul in London - I couldn‘t these! I love stocking up on translated fiction when I‘m here, as it‘s harder to find in Adelaide. 😍📚
