The Revolutions
The Revolutions: A Novel | Felix Gilman
4 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Following his spectacularly reviewed Half-Made World duology, Felix Gilman pens a sweeping stand-alone tale of Victorian science fiction, arcane exploration, and planetary romance. In 1893, young journalist Arthur Shaw is at work in the British Museum Reading Room when the Great Storm hits London, wreaking unprecedented damage. In its aftermath, Arthur's newspaper closes, owing him money, and all his debts come due at once. His fianc Josephine takes a job as a stenographer for some of the fashionable spiritualist and occult societies of fin de sicle London society. At one of her meetings, Arthur is given a job lead for what seems to be accounting work, but at a salary many times what any clerk could expect. The work is long and peculiar, as the workers spend all day performing unnerving calculations that make them hallucinate or even go mad, but the money is compelling. Things are beginning to look up when the perils of dabbling in the esoteric suddenly come to a head: A war breaks out between competing magical societies. Josephine joins one of them for a hazardous occult explorationan experiment which threatens to leave her stranded at the outer limits of consciousness, among the celestial spheres. Arthur won't give up his great love so easily, and hunts for a way to save her, as Josephine fights for survival...somewhere in the vicinity of Mars. I own THE REVOLUTIONS partly because I liked two of Gilman‘s earlier books and mostly because this copy had an envelope tucked inside it. I very much wanted to know what was in the envelope, but I figured it‘d be gauche to open it and check right there in the thrift store, so I paid my $0.99 and took it home.

It was an old Father‘s Day card. I crossed out the names and gave it to my dad as a joke. He laughed.

readordierachel That's a great story 🙂 3y
xicanti @readordierachel it‘s turning out to be a great book, too. My weirdly-motivated purchase paid off! 3y

Pickpick

Forgot to take a final photograph of this before I sent it home with my sister.
A young couple in the late Victorian age become embroiled in an occult/mystical group‘s quest to go to Mars through astral projection (sort of).
It‘s a cool idea, buried under too many other cool ideas. I think the book would‘ve been stronger if the author had narrowed his focus a bit.

#weekendreads @rachelsbrittain
1️⃣ Tagged and The Way of All Flesh. About a hundred pages to go in each.
2️⃣ Both, but slight preference for mornings. Starting the day with reading is A+.
3️⃣ Not really any? I think I recently followed Laila Lalami as a goodreads author, and I‘m a faithful reader of Charlie Stross‘s blog but that‘s about it. Wish more authors were on Litsy!

Have been trying to reintroduce morning reading into my routine but as you can see I am already on my phone instead. At least cuddles with Jacques are happening whether I‘m reading or scrolling.

I‘m the first person to post about this book on Litsy, which surprises me! I‘m 100ish pages in and it‘s a lot of fun so far!
