What We Will Become
What We Will Become: A Mother, a Son, and a Journey of Transformation | Mimi Lemay
4 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
A mothers memoir of her transgender childs odyssey, and her journey outside the boundaries of the faith and culture that shaped her. From the age of two-and-a-half, Jacob, born Em, adamantly told his family he was a boy. While his mother Mimi struggled to understand and come to terms with the fact that her child may be transgender, she experienced a sense of dj vuthe journey to uncover the source of her childs inner turmoil unearthed ghosts from Mimis past and her own struggle to live an authentic life. Mimi was raised in an ultra-Orthodox Jewish family, every aspect of her life dictated by ancient rules and her role as a woman largely preordained from cradle to grave. As a young woman, Mimi wrestled with the demands of her faith and eventually made the painful decision to leave her religious community and the strict gender roles it upheld. Having risen from the ashes of her former life, Mimi was prepared to help her son forge a new one at a time when there was little consensus on how best to help young transgender children. Dual narratives of faith and motherhood weave together to form a heartfelt portrait of an unforgettable family. Brimming with love and courage, What We Will Become is a powerful testament to how painful events from the past can be redeemed to give us hope for the future.

Day 11 of #adventrecommends ... another favorite from 2019.

A beautiful account of a mother‘s journey to recognition of her transgender son. Lemay alternates the chapters between the growing awareness that her child is transgender with accounts of her own upbringing in an Orthodox Jewish faith where certain expectations were made on her to live a certain way to be a “proper woman.”

COMPLETED for #NFNov .

#TIL: 41% of transgender people attempt suicide at some point in their lives. 😢

Amiable @rsteve388 Shouldn‘t this be 9 points? 🧐 4y
Reviewsbylola This sounds like an important perspective. 4y
Amiable @Reviewsbylola At first it felt like a distraction from the story of her son's transition at such an early age. But then it all tied together and you understand the parallels. And the last few chapters made me tear up. It's really very well done. 4y
Clwojick Yes, I'll add on 3 more points to your total :) 4y

Who doesn‘t love early Saturday mornings when the spouse is still asleep and you can relax in front of the fire with a #NFNov book and a giant mug of tea? 🤷🏻‍♀️

#TIL: Jews believe that each soul is born as a pair, male and female, who are destined to meet up on earth to fulfill their shared purpose.

Saw a review of this one on WBUR and immediately downloaded it. Just released today. It‘s a mother‘s memoir of her transgender child‘s odyssey, and her own journey outside the boundaries of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish faith and culture that shaped her.
