What She Lost
What She Lost | Melissa W. Hunter
2 posts | 1 read
For thirteen-year-old Sarah Waldman, life in the small Polish town of Olkusz is idyllic, grounded in her loving, close-knit family and the traditions of their Jewish faith. But in 1939, as the Nazis come to power, a storm is gathering-a relentless, unforgiving storm that will sweep Sarah and her family into years of misery in the ghetto and concentration camps, tearing them apart. Will Sarah's strong will and determination be enough for her to survive when everything she loves is taken from her? Is it possible to resurrect a life-and find love-from the ruins? Or will Sarah be forever haunted by the memories of what she lost? Part memoir, part fiction, What She Lost is the reimagined true-life story of the author's grandmother growing into a woman amid the anguish of the Holocaust. It is a tale of resilience, of rebuilding a life, and of rediscovering love. AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY: Melissa W. Hunter is an author and blogger from Cincinnati, Ohio. This is a fictonalized account of the true story of the author's grandmother and her time spent in the concentration camps and her time after. I started just yesterday and am 82% finished.

Cinfhen Thanks for tagging me #stacked l just signed up for a Jewish Roots trip to Poland. My grandfather was born there and though he and all 9 of his siblings and parents got out between 1934-1937 all of his first cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents died in the Holocaust. I‘ll be visiting Poland and all the sites in February. I‘m going with my daughter. I‘m mentally preparing myself 💔 4y
Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen oh, I'm so sorry 💔💔. I'm sure the trip will be hard. Glad your father and his siblings and your grandparents were able to get out. 4y
Cinfhen It‘s my grandfather who fled Poland , so I got to know my great grandparents and all of my great aunts and uncles. In this sense, I‘m lucky. It‘s going to be a very emotionally draining trip, but it‘s something I‘ve always talked about doing. We will be joined on the trip with a survivor who will be our guide along with another guide from Yad Vashem, Israel‘s Holocaust Museum😢😭 4y

Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen oh wow. I don't know for sure, but I've always had a feeling I had Jewish ancestry. No one on my mother's side ever talked about their past and now there's no one to ask. So I was doing family history research and found a lot of Jewish last names... this eventually led me to Yad Vashem and I looked up a few names that I know and there were so many... like I said I'm not positive still looking into it. You are very lucky. 4y
Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen sorry you mentioned Yad Vashem and that kinda brought me back to all those names. I'm sure the trip will be draining, but it will be informative to have a guide who is a survivor and one from Yad Vashem as well. 4y
Cinfhen It‘s vey chilling to make that discovery @Insightsintobooks good luck with your search 💚 4y
Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen I agree, thank you. ❤ All I know for sure is when I converted It felt like I was coming home. (I know many converts feel this way, but i don't know its hard to explain). 4y
Cinfhen Converting to Judaism is not easy at all. I admire your dedication and strength 💜 4y
Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen Thank you. I couldn't imagine my life without Judaism. It's like air. 4y
