The Killing Zone: How & Why Pilots Die
The Killing Zone: How & Why Pilots Die | Paul Craig
4 posts
This literal survival guide for new pilots identifies "the killing zone," the 40-250 flight hours during which unseasoned aviators are likely to commit lethal mistakes. Presents the statistics of how many pilots will die in the zone within a year; calls attention to the eight top pilot killers (such as "VFR into IFR," "Takeoff and Climb"); and maps strategies for avoiding, diverting, correcting, and managing the dangers. Includes a Pilot Personality Self-Assessment Exercise that identifies pilot "types" and how each type can best react to survive the killing zone.

Finally finished this one today; it‘s very dry in places, and a little repetitive, but has some very important learning points for anyone wanting to become a pilot. #TIL that I don‘t have the typical pilot personality, but that‘s not a bad thing, as the typical pilot personality can often lead to poor decision-making - there‘s a fine line between being adventurous and being a thrill-seeker...

#TIL that most fatal aviation accidents occur when the pilot has between 50 and 350 hours‘ experience. Below 50 hours, a student pilot will be accompanied by an instructor, above 350, they have gained sufficient experience to significantly reduce risk. Between 50-350 hours, a pilot is relatively newly qualified and really, still learning about real-life flying, and more at risk in unexpected situations.

Always encouraging when you‘re a trainee pilot, having a quick browse through Flight Equipment catalogue, and come across such nerve-settling tomes as this😱 This may well be my next #NFNov read!
