What practical things have you learned from books?

Aimeesue Not that I actually HAVE a treadle operated sewing machine, mind you. 😂 (edited) 4y
Butterfinger Make a fire with money. Gary Paulsen's Hatchet. 4y
julesG I'm still sorry my grandfather didn't allow me to take my great-grandmother's treadle sewing machine. But I'm fairly certain that I'm well-learned and well-read should disaster strike. 😁 4y

Aimeesue @Butterfinger Yessssssss! It's not like we can burn books! 4y
Aimeesue @julesG Oh, my! I'm sad just hearing about it! There still quite a few around, and in use, apparently. 4y
ImperfectCJ I learned so much from the Little House books, like how to make buttermilk, how to build a smokehouse, how to train oxen, and how to treat frostbitten extremities, all very useful in San Diego. 4y
julesG @ImperfectCJ 😂😂😂 4y
Bklover @ImperfectCJ 😂😂😂. 4y
Aimeesue @ImperfectCJ Yes! And how to make maple syrup candy in the snow! Which I've done. And I've actually tapped maple trees and helped boil it down into syrup - rural New England 5th grade project. 🤣🤣🤣 4y
ImperfectCJ @Aimeesue Yep! We (my kids and I) read the books while we were living in Massachusetts, so we got to experience a lot more than we would have had we read them in CA. And I've actually used the buttermilk instructions for Girl Scout projects...Ingalls's notes on that were very helpful! 4y
Aimeesue @ImperfectCJ I grew up in the Berkshires. 😁 4y
ImperfectCJ @Aimeesue Awesome spot to grow up! We lived in Marlborough for 6+ years. Different from the Berkshires. :-) 4y
Aimeesue @ImperfectCJ A former mill town, yes? Not sure you'd get a lot of tree tapping done there these days, but OTOH, probably fewer bears too. 😂 (edited) 4y
ImperfectCJ @Aimeesue True, we had to drive a little for tree tapping, but fewer bears. We did have a lot of u-pick farms, though, which made us feel connected to agrarian life. 😆 4y
