Sarah Ladd's books never disappoint. The author has a way of drawing the reader into Regency era England with its unique history, sights, sounds, tastes, and events. This plot is driven by beautifully sketched characters and has a bit of underlying gothic mystery and suspense to keep it moving at a nice pace. The story takes place in a copper mining town of early 1800s and I learned quite a bit about mining through the story.

Julia heads to Lanwyn Manor to act as companion to her bedridden, pregnant cousin. Of course, intrigue and danger arrive with her. Legends fill the house with a sinister air, tempers flare from mining-related struggles, and Julia becomes caught in the romantic intentions of the Blake twins.

Ladd allows the story around Julia to unfold with ease—and a couple great twists—making it a delightful combination of mystery and romance. #jumpstart2020

hes7 @4thhouseontheleft Yeah, I think it could work—though it is more of a plot that has some mystery than a “mystery,” if that makes sense. Some others that could work are Arrowood (McHugh), Two Can Keep a Secret (McManus), and The Thirteenth Tale (Setterfield). 4y

I enjoyed this sweet, clean romance set in 1818 Cornwall. Julia, a young woman who was recently duped by a man she loved, arrives to keep her bedridden cousin company, only to discover a “haunted” house reputed to contain hidden treasure, irate miners who are upset to be out of work when her uncle closes his mine and possible danger from an unknown source. She meets Isaac and Matthew, twin brothers who own a mine nearby and begins to heal her ❤️⬇️
