I loved everything about this feminist collection of #shortstories by award-winning #Canadianauthor Audrey Thomas. The richly-evoked settings vary from Ghana to Galiano Island to Mexico and Scotland. The prose style also varies, including stream of consciousness, multiple viewpoints & epistolary, sometimes enigmatic, always with carefully crafted sentences. Best is that they are about women‘s lives & seem to live on almost like novels in my head.

Lindy A big thank you to @shawnmooney for gifting me this book and then buddy reading it with me through December. #blameitonLitsy 4y
merelybookish And a nice retro Canadian Library edition to boot! 👍 4y
Lindy @merelybookish Yes, it's a selection of stories from her earlier collections. This one was published in 1981 by McClelland and Stewart (I still miss their former existence as a Canadian-owned publisher). It was purchased at the University of Saskatchewan bookstore for $5.95. 4y
merelybookish @Lindy Yes, a shame. I recently read stats on how many Canadian books (as opposed to US or British books) Canadians buy each year. It was kind of sad. 4y
Lindy @merelybookish A recent survey showed that Canadians WANT to buy Canadian books, but they don‘t find it easy to tell which books are Canadian. 4y

He and his first wife had been so shy, so horribly reticent about their bodies. It had nearly killed him. It would, in the end, have killed him. She had written him long, hysterical letters, proclaiming her love, her unhappiness, her desire to try again. Or presenting him with past hurts like unpaid bills.

She had been thinking of failures & suicides & had gone to mass on Palm Sunday in hopes of finding something positive—if only for a second, if only for an instant, if only, even, an aura or a whiff of hope for her salvation. Outside the Parroquia women and men were braiding palms into elaborate patterns. She bought a small crucifix and went in, covering her head, but the mass was a disappointment.

Lindy @8little_paws Thanks. I had carved the block a long time ago but resurrected it last month when I took a printmaking on fabric course. This piece in the photo has been made into a reusable beeswax food wrap. 4y

“Wait a minute, I want to buy a balloon.”
“What colour? I‘ll treat you to one.”
“Red,” she said, “yellow, I don‘t care.”
In a sudden rush of delight he bought them all. Eighteen, twenty, he wasn‘t sure how many. The balloon seller thought he was crazy. Loco loco.

I‘m trying to decide whether to have cookies for breakfast or something more nourishing. What do you say? I‘m definitely starting with tea and another story from the tagged book.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Tea, biscuits and a book sounds like a promising start to the day! 4y
TheSpineView I vote cookies!🍪 4y
AnneCecilie Cookies. It‘s only Christmas once a year 4y

Lindy @thegirlwiththelibrarybag @TheSpineView @AnneCecilie @twohectobooks @Annl @BookishTrish @Meghan1 hello to my fellow cookie enthusiasts! I decided to make blueberry buckwheat pancakes for breakfast and save the cookies for after. There are many hours yet today for enjoying the Christmas baking that kind friends have gifted to us. 🎄 4y
AnneCecilie Pancakes sounds good too 😊 4y
Lindy @AnneCecilie 😁👍 4y
saresmoore The cookies are beautiful, but it‘s your buckwheat pancakes that tempt me most! Happy Christmas, Lindy! 4y

My sweetie has given me a short story advent calendar for the previous four years, but this year her surgery got in the way. I‘m making my own one-short-story-a-day-in-December regimen by combining my buddy read (with Shawn) of the tagged book, and a collection of Japanese stories gifted to me by my dear friend Kathy.

batsy I've been eyeing that book of Japanese stories! Look forward to your thoughts :) 4y
Lindy @batsy I‘m starting it today. 😊 4y
