Big Bend Vistas
Big Bend Vistas: Journeys Through Big Bend National Park | William MacLeod
1 post | 1 read | 1 to read
A superb souvenir of this exotic terrain, Big Bend Vistas takes you on five journeys that begin at Panther Junction and travel to Study Butte; then on to the Chisos Basin, Santa Elena Canyon, Boquillas Canyon, and finally to Persimmon Gap. Easy to read and understand, Big Bend Vistas describes how volcanoes millions of years ago created some of the most striking scenery in Texas. The author includes vivid photographs, maps, and diagrams that explain the landscape and geology of Big Bend National Park in layman's terms. This is the third edition of Big Bend Vistas in the acclaimed "Vista" series dedicated to making Texas geology interesting for everyone.

Shockingly I‘m the first to review this 2002 geology book on Big Bend National Park (far west Texas along the Rio Grande). The area is geologically bewildering. The book, a roadside geology, is crazy detailed but answered a lot of my questions. One lesson is that this area is far far more complex than I realized, the other is that geologists have actually worked a heck of a lot of this out. (Picture is mine)

Lcsmcat Geology in the west can be really in your face. We had fun exploring it with our kids when we lived in Utah. 4y
Crazeedi That is a gorgeous photo 4y
Graywacke @Lcsmcat yeah, so true. Utah is a lot of awesome geologically. Mountain, canyons, arches, desert exposures, salt lakes, ancient salt basins controlling modern drainage (ok, the last might reveal some my own specific interests...) 4y

Theaelizabet Beautiful picture! 4y
ljuliel Nice photo. I always pictured Texas as being mostly flat, but I‘ve never been there so I just have to picture places in my head that I‘ve not been to. 4y
Graywacke @BarbaraBB @batsy @Theaelizabet 👍 @Cathythoughts yeah, especially here, but yes 4y
Graywacke @ljuliel 🙂 Well, Houston (east of Flatonia - a real place) is really flat. And so is all of south, east, most of north, and, despite some elevation and a few huge canyons, most of northwest Texas. But in the middle (Austin, San Antonio) is Hill Country and in this far of corner are actual mountains. (Guadalupe & Davis Mtns and in Big Bend where the Rockies and mostly buried Ouchita Mountains come together - making a geological mess of things) 4y
ljuliel I guess I pictured all of Texas looking like the photos in the Lonesome Dove miniseries ! 😂. It seems like most of them were flat, dry and brown with very little vegetation. Thank you for the explanation. 4y
Graywacke @ljuliel That‘s really funny that the miniseries defines Texas. 🙂 ... I finally read Lonesome Dove earlier this year, and actually, I believe there are no mountains in that book! 4y
