'Funny, touching and ludicrously British.' India Knight'Makes Christmas slightly less awful' Al Murray A Very British Christmas is a twelve-stage sleigh ride through the best, worst, strangest and funniest aspects of the Christmas holiday, with cultural icons saluted, national habits dissected and personal reminiscences from those who've eaten all the mince pies and lived to tell the tale. The essential Christmas stocking filler for every Brit who's ever found themselves on a deflating air bed in their parents' spare room wedged up against the washing machine come Christmas Eve and wondering why this Christmas, just like every year, doesn't look like the ones on the telly.

This one is nonfiction with tidbits about British customs around the holiday. Light in tone, the book is nonfiction and mentions broad topics like Christmas trees or spirits and then follows up with short and often quirky stories from Brits who‘ve a family story or example of the custom. I was delighted, probably because I spent a semester in Wales in college during the season and have such a fondness for UK. Pictured w my very American holiday.

I‘m taking a break from Christmas presents to read a Christmas book. I‘m feeling fairly Grinch-y since oldest son‘s girlfriend of 6 years broke off their newly minted engagement and broke his heart. My mama heart cannot get beyond his devastation to be interested in Christmas stuff right now so maybe a book will help?

LiseWorks Oh no! Maybe it's for the best. Keep you chin up. 2y
Aims42 Ugh, that sucks! 😢 I hope it‘s for the best (still sucks and hurts though) 2y
LeahBergen Ohhh, that‘s so sad! 🙁 2y

slategreyskies I have two teen boys, and one of my biggest fears is that they‘ll fall for someone who breaks their heart. I totally get it. I‘m so sorry it‘s tough right now. Hang in there. Hugs!! 2y
Jas16 Oh no! He is lucky to have you and your support. (edited) 2y
Crazeedi Oh no Kristen, that's so sad. Mothers hearts are intimately tied to their children even when grown. I'm sure he knows you are there for him. And to break up after getting engaged? That's mean, why not at least before she said yes to it. Think he might be better off if she could do that 2y
TheBookHippie 💔I saw this quote this week “Being a mother is both Hope and Worry, Fear and Faith, a daily exercise.” I‘m so sorry. 2y
Megabooks Oh no! I am so sorry that happened to your son. 💔 I know your heart is breaking for him. 2y

This is not what I expected. It is nonfiction and discusses different aspects of Christmas such as food, music, and shopping. it was interesting and I really enjoyed the little stories throughout.

As a Yank living in the UK for the past 12 years I love these Very British books. Brits do celebrate Christmas a bit differently than us Yanks, Britsh Christmas celebrations are much more boozy lol. I do have to admit that the Brits make it better with Boxing Day 😀

TrishB Boxing Days are the best 👍🏻 6y
